Learn to Use
Your Neighborhood Watch

The Neighborhood Watch system that is developing in our community is being under utilized. There are a number of new services which will benefit your property and make your home a safer place to live.
Those who are serving as Block Captains are anxious to make this park a very unappealing target for thieves and vandals. They have met with almost everyone in the park and explained how they want to keep an eye on your home when you are away. You can help by notifying them and telling them if anyone will be at your home while you are away.
This notification can be done with a phone call or if you prefer by internet. On our web site,"Longview Hills @ Newport" you will find a link under Park Interests called:N'WatchHomeaway PatrolFormNEW! Click it and it will take you to our Security Page. On the page is a box which says, "Click here for information." Do so, and a check-off form comes up. You just check the appropriate boxes and then click send. Your form will be sent to all the block captains who have e-mail addresses. Give it a try.
Increase your peace of mind. Use the form when you are thousands of miles away. Just get on a computer and call up our web site.
We need to start reporting all suspicious activity in the park. So, if you see something that is not quite right, but feel it does not warrant a 911 call to the police, you have three alternatives available to you.
First: During office hours you can contact our police department on their business phone: 265-4231.
Second: If you like, our web page has a direct link to the Police Chief. You will find it underneath the above mentioned N’WatchHomeaway PatrolForm link. It says, "Report Suspicious Activity Here". By clicking it you bring up an email form. Fill it out and click send. The Chief’s secretary checks that mail at least once a day during the week. For that reason, if the problem is more immediate, the police have requested that you call and they will dispatch somebody immediately. Along the lines of this subject, unlike the larger cities, our police want to hear about anything suspicious, no matter how trivial. You won’t look foolish. Use the form.
Third: You could report your suspicion to your Block Captain.
The main thing is to cease being complacent or too embarrassed to act. That is what the burglar is counting on your doing. To remove our Park from the EZ Pickin’s list, we are advocating that we, as a group, become more nosy about what is going on in our neighborhood and developing a good relationship with the police by not being afraid to inform them of suspicious activity in our park.

SLOW DOWN

The speed limit in the park is 15 mph, yet many exceed that limit. This is especially evident on Windmill, going in and out of the park. For the sake of your neighbors, please make every effort to observe the speed limit.

LONGVIEW HILLS
SOCIAL CLUB

Discussion was again held on the purchase of identifying car decals. We are still investigating the most cost effective way to do this. Pending further information, the subject was tabled.

This was the first combined meeting of the Social Club and the Block Captains. Incidents were discussed and it was suggested we may want to start a patrol. No action was formally taken.

Sylvia Smith will be taking over the production of the directory and plans to publish one soon.

Ron Thomas reported the progress on the street lights and acknowledged the help of Lee Watkins, Bill Furgason, and Jim Rose on the project.

Since we still need one more breakfast team, it was discussed that possibly a pot luck brunch could be held for a month there was no breakfast team scheduled.

A Second Time Around Sale will be held the Saturday before Labor Day. The date will be August 30th.

Charlene Shimek asked about a map of the Neighborhood Watch grids. (There is now one posted on the bulletin board.)

LADIES COFFEE

Don’t forget to attend the Ladies Coffee, Tuesday, June 24th at 10 AM. This is a wonderful opportunity to get acquainted with other ladies in the community.
All ladies coffees are "NO HOST" unless someone volunteers by signing the sheet on the bulletin board. Duties would include supplying refreshments, making coffee, and seeing that the dishes and silverware are put into the dishwasher and put away after washing.

REMEMBERING THE
MOTHER’S DAY BRUNCH

On May 11th, there was a happy gathering in our clubhouse that may tentatively and hopefully be referred to as the First Annual Mother’s Day Brunch!
A variety of fine dishes were prepared by some of our best cooks and the spirit of the day was one of enjoyment.
Tribute was given to thoughts of motherhood, our own mothers, and cherished memories. There was the reading of anecdotes, poems, some humorous, as expressed by Erma Bombeck, and others of a more serious and sentimental nature reflecting back to mothers we have admired and loved.
Alternating with the readings were drawings for 21 gifts. These coupons and certificates, ranging in value from $5.00 to $25.00 came from our very generous local merchants for breakfasts, lunches, or dinners, for haircuts, car services, bottles of wine, candles, and books. This quite naturally lead to a time of conviviality. It was a day to be remembered.

MENTORS NEEDED

Oceanspray Family Center Discovery Program is looking for adults to be mentors in their Reading Buddy Program. The program links an adult with a school age student to provide friendship, support, and advocacy in a one-to-one relationship to enhance self-esteem and life skills. Mentors meet with their student on a weekly basis to talk, listen and share activities, and assist the student in problem solving.
There is currently a group meeting on Tuesday afternoons and traveling to Oceanview Assisted Living Center. We want to start another group that would meet at Oceanspray Family Center to accommodate more students. We are especially in need of men volunteers. If you are interested in becoming part of this program or for more information, please call Elaine Adkins (afternoons) at Oceanspray, 541-265-5326 x 317.

DOOR WEDGE ALARM

If you put in an order for a door wedge alarm or jammer, I will notify you as soon as the shipment arrives. The checks need to be made out to Arlene Klish as I am putting these on my charge. I will let you know the amount owed when I am ready to deliver them.

911 CALLS

If you have to call 911 anytime the gate would be closed, try to remember to give them the gate code. We have had problems with emergency vehicles not being able to get in.

THE 6th LVH 4th OF JULY
POTLUCK/PICNIC

For 6 years, Dan and I have had the pleasure of having an open house potluck/picnic at our home for the residents of Longview Hills on the 4th of July. This year will be no different.
On July 4th you are invited to come to 638 NE 56th street here in Longview Hills at 6:00 PM. This is a time for you, and us, to meet new neighbors and to have an enjoyable evening.
We ask everyone to bring a dish of food to share, meat to bar-b-que, warm clothes, and a chair per person.
Dan and I will provide tables and table settings, condiments, coffee and teas, and a view of the fireworks.
For those new to the area, Newport will be shooting off fireworks in the bay at approximately 10 PM.

TAKE HEART

You have been missing your popcorn haven’t you? Well, take heart, help is on the way. We actually have 2 popcorn machines and they have both been in the hospital afflicted with the same malady. Jack Scherer has come to the rescue. The same part has been ordered for each machine and as soon as he gets them fixed, we can enjoy our popcorn again.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

The Block Captains have been meeting every two weeks during our kick-off period. We have decided to combine the Captains meeting with the Social Club meeting starting in May. The Social Club is working hand in hand with the Neighborhood Watch Program, so it makes sense to combine the meetings. We encourage all residents to attend these meetings. All residents are members. It is an open meeting and very informative.
We are moving ahead with the Lighting Project. An order is in process
for those who have signed up for the flashing light. If you have not signed up, please do. We will do the houses in phases and will order parts as we finish a phase. It will take time to complete. Anyone who feels they can help, please contact Ron Thomas.
Sylvia Smith has graciously agreed to serve as the accountant for the money for the lights. She will cooperate with Betty Hanus, treasurer, to work out the details. If you signed up and agreed to pay for the light, please make your check payable to Longview Hills Social Club and mark it for Light Project.
You may put your check in Sylvia’s box, #152. It is marked with red tape. The finished cost for the light is $35.00. If you checked the sign-up sheet indicating you would donate, make out your check for any amount over $35.00 and the extra will be used to install a light for residents who may not be able to pay.
We discussed Neighborhood Watch decals for your door windows. They would be 3" x 4" and adhere to your window. This is another deterrent and an announcement that we are protecting and watching out for each other. We will see if local merchants would purchase these for us. We would also like 6 more signs in the park at strategic, very visible locations
Things are moving well. Our measurable success already is due to the dedication of many unsung heroes. Park residents have supported this effort. Thanks to everyone who threw your hat in the ring. There is no stopping us now. We are on our way to having a well secured park with people caring and sharing with each other. VIALS OF LIFE

Vials of Life are plastic containers which can be kept in your refrigerator. A note on the refrigerator would indicate that a Vial of Life was inside. The vial would contain information critical to emergency services personnel, such as your physician’s name and phone number, medications you are on, and any allergies to medications. Arlene Klish has obtained a supply of these. If you would like to have one, contact Arlene.

Arlene Klish updated the group on the progress of the Neighborhood Watch Program. (See details on page 1.)

Charlene Shimek demonstrated the use of door jammers again (See article on page 6 for more information.)

Ron Thomas reported on the progress of the Light Project to install flashing red lights beside the regular light on each light pole in resident yards. It is taking longer than expected because of the rusted condition of many of the lights. They are being rebuilt and that takes time. The extra money involved will be paid by the Social Club.

Don Newman met with Sue Wilson and Betty Scott to check out bazaar items. Those being kept are stored in Irene Repetski’s attic.

Discussion was tabled on the purchase of identifying car decals.

Kathy Furgason showed a picture directory from her church and suggested we might try something similar. (See article on page 6.)

It was noted that we still need one more breakfast team.

SALVATION ARMY

You will notice I have put the name, "Salvation Army," on the box under the table where the Contact box stood. I have been involved with the Salvation Army for over 15 years in Lincoln County. Today, we have the best executive director I have ever worked with in all those years.
The thrift store in Newport is under the direction of the Eugene Recycle Store and they pay the local Lincoln County Chapter $3,000 per month for Linclon County operations.
If you have any problems or concerns about the Salvation Army, please call me. They will very much appreciate any donations you might have. If you have anything to donate that will not fit in the box, please call me and I will pick it up.

On May 17th, breakfast will be served at the clubhouse from 8-10 AM. We will enjoy French Toast with a choice of fruit syrups, Sizzling Sausage, Fresh Fruit Compote, Juice (A choice of two), and Hot Coffee or Tea. This scrumptious menu will be prepared by Jim & Jean Hart, Jim & Bonnie Rose, and Dan & Sue Wilson.

BULLETIN BOARD POSTERS

A suggestion has been made by Larry, manager, that persons placing a bulletin or other information on one of the three bulletin boards should sign their name. He also requests that any information taped to the entrance door be limited.
This is a good idea. It would also be helpful if the items were dated. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation. I try hard to keep the boards neat, orderly, and up-to-date. Suggestions are always welcome.

PICTURE DIRECTORY

An idea has been presented to the Social Club and we would like your input. Currently, we have a directory of residents which lists each resident’s name, address, phone number, and lot number.
A proposal has been made to expand that directory, by adding pictures of each resident of LVH. There are many new residents in the park and the thought is, it would be nice to be able to put a face with a name.
Pictures could be taken at the clubhouse on certain days (to be determined) by one or more residents who have digital cameras. For those who find it difficult to leave their homes, an appointment could be made to come to your home and have your picture taken there.
The cost for a picture directory would be minimal, probably around $5-$6 per household. This cost would cover the paper, printing, etc. Once each quarter, an update could be given to each household with additions, changes and deletions. Purchase of a picture directory would be completely optional.
Right now we would appreciate your thoughts and opinions on whether or not to pursue a picture directory. Contact me at furgiefew@aol.com, leave a note in Box #159, or make your wishes known at the next Social Club meeting, May 19th at 10:00 AM at the clubhouse.

DOOR JAMMERS AND ALARMS

Ordering information for these was included in last month’s newsletter. For orders of $100 or more, there is no shipping charge. It seems a good idea to order together for those who would like to have them. The following choices are available.

Big Jammer Door Brace Part 80115
($24.95) 20 gauge steel
Will fit any door, including sliding glass. This is a sturdy steel bar. There is a rubber tip where it rests on the floor and a U-shaped piece of rubber that fits under the door knob. This prevents the door from being opened. For sliding glass doors, the tips are removed and the bar is placed in the track.

This is a wedge and has a very loud alarm, if anyone tries to open a door.

I will be putting an order in for the Door Wedge Alarms demonstrated by Charlene Shimek in the last few meetings. I have many orders now and will be putting the order in around the 3rd week of May. If you would like one or more, please put your name and phone number and the amount you want in my box at the clubhouse. I will be pleased to include your orders. The cost of the alarm is $9.00 (with our 10% discount) and my box is #83. This is a good deal as these alarms cost $25.00 at a local business.

Another year has hopped on by,
and we have another winner.

Mary Ford guessed the number of eggs in the basket at the community center.

There were 557 eggs and Mary guessed there were 543. (a difference of 14)

Irene Reptski came in a close second, guessing 574. (a difference of 17)

Many thanks to those residents who called, left e-mails, and little notes in the eggs. They mean so much to me.

And to those who donated eggs, as they are always needed when we have to weed out so many each year, many thanks.
