NEW OFFICERS
The time has come to elect new officers for the Social Club. Several positions have been vacated and we are working to find others willing to fill those empty spots.
Donna Talarski has volunteered to Chair or Co-Chair the Social Club. The meeting would have to be held after 4:00 PM, but that seems doable.
Nancy Moore said she would be willing to do the Secretarial duties for half of the year, but they go to Arizona and we would need another person to take the minutes when she is gone.
Kathy Smith said she would do the kitchen, but wants someone to help her.
We need help, as always, to fill positions. We hope many of you will be willing to get involved in the Social Club. If you are willing to volunteer some of your time to help the Social Club run smoothly, please contact Jacky Thomas or Arlene Klish.
CLUBHOUSE LIBRARY
Nancy Lee Moore has donated 50 new, unread, romance paperback books to our library. Nancy, we thank you very much for your most generous donation. I informed her that any duplicate books are now donated to the Newport Senior Center. Peggy, at the center, was extremely pleased that they would be receiving paperbacks from Longview Hills.
This latest contribution of paperbacks will be placed on the last shelf of the romance section. Books presently on that shelf will be held for later use in our library.
LVH has a great library due to the donation of books by the residents, and the Social Club furnishing money to purchase all of the bookcases. Marian and I are made aware of all the book lovers in the park by the books that are returned for filing.
Please notice all the like-new fiction hardcovers. If you are unable to locate a particular book, look on the hardcover shelves. Happy Reading!

NEW GRILL
Charlene Shimek donated a stovetop grill to the Social Club kitchen. This new grill will be well used by all the volunteer cooks, especially for the "hotcake" committee. We thank you, Charlene, for your generosity!

Discussion was again held on the idea of identifying car decals. It was decided not to pursue this project.
Betty Hanus reported on a shredder from Thompson’s Sanitary which can be rented for $29.50 per month. The Social Club decided to try it for a month and the shredder will be located in the clubhouse during the month of August for all residents to use. (See article on Identity Theft on page 4)
There continues to be an ongoing discussion regarding the vacant lot on Evergreen.
Ron Thomas reported that a horseshoe pit will be installed.
A mobility fair was discussed and it was suggested that it be combined with the flu shots in October and possibly other medical information could be provided at that time.
It is time for the nomination of new officers. That process is being worked on. (See article on page 1)
The Neighborhood Watch is doing well. Also, the group cleaning up yards has made progress.

LADIES COFFEE
Don’t forget to attend the Ladies Coffee, Tuesday, August 26th at 10 AM. This is a wonderful opportunity to get acquainted with other ladies in the community.
All ladies coffees are "NO HOST" unless someone volunteers by signing the sheet on the bulletin board. Duties would include supplying refreshments, making coffee, and seeing that the dishes and silverware are put into the dishwasher and put away after washing.
IDENTITY THEFT
One of the modern-day hazards, we all face, is having someone use our Social Security, credit card, or bank account numbers to make purchases or withdrawals.
To guard against an unauthorized person obtaining any form of identifying number, we are cautioned to shred all documents that might contain any of our identifying numbers. Tossing them in the garbage isn’t good enough. The list of documents that should be shredded includes:
Canceled checks
Bank statements
Credit cards, receipts and bills
"Pre-approved" credit card
solicitations
Financial records
Medicare records
Prescription labels
Fortunately enough, we have a local company - Thompson’s Sanitary Service - offering a secure shredding service. At a cost of only $29.50, they deliver a locked, 33 gallon drum that has a deposit slot in the lid. When filled, Thompson’s Sanitary Service takes the drum back and the actual shredding is then done by two disadvantaged people - neither of whom can read.
The Social Club is sponsoring this program to help prevent identity theft. A blue shredding container will be at the clubhouse in August. Regular office type staples are OK, but please, no paper clips or other trash.

HUSKE'S TRAVEL
Verne Huske, owner of Huske's Travel Service, arrived in Newport February 1, 1972, to open a travel agency. Verne had been working for West Coast Airlines and Globe Travel in North Bend, OR since 1959.
Huske's Travel has been at our present location for the last 33 years. The office has been expanded twice to make room for the business growth during those first years. Huske's Travel is what is called a full service agency. We handle all travel, including airlines, Amtrak train, cruises, tours, groups and hotels.
We have built our business with many years of knowledge, training in all new systems, and taking familiarization trips to inspect what we sell in person. Our motto is: "Find the best cost and schedule for whatever trip our clients have in mind and always be professional in how we work."
Since 9/11, the travel agency business has changed. We now specialize in Cruises and Tours all over the world. Many years ago, we helped form a group that we call "Riverside Travel Group." This allows us to have much better pricing for Cruises and Tours, making us one of the most competitive agencies on the coast.
Our manager, Susy, is our European expert. Verne handles Cruises, and we both do tours and all other aspects of the business.

SECOND TIME AROUND
It is time once again for our annual Second Time Around Sale. It takes place each year on the Saturday before Labor Day. This year’s sale will be Saturday, August 30th, starting at 9:00 AM.
Any family who wishes to place items for sale in their garage or on their driveway, are encouraged to do so. This sale is advertised in the local paper and we usually have quite a bit of response from the community.
If you are interested in participating in this year’s sale, please sign up on the bulletin board in the clubhouse. That way, we can know who is participating and provide balloons to mark your home as one which has merchandise for sale.
Some of you may not have enough items to think it would be worth your while to be a participating family. In a case like this, it is suggested that you check the sign-up sheet to see if a neighbor might be participating and you could add your few items to their sale.
We hope to have maps available to shoppers indicating the homes where sales are being held. For this reason, we need you to sign up early.
Some discussion was held regarding the possibility of having a pre-sale on Friday evening for park residents only. Watch the bulletin board for any announcements.
FOOD SHARE/SALVATION ARMY
The donations to Food Share this month totaled 110 lbs. and the donations to Salvation Army were down to 22 lbs.
A new Food Share program is the lunch program Monday through Friday for those 18 and under. It has had good support and continues to operate. Thanks to all of you.

STATE FAIR BOOTH
The Central Oregon Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a booth for Lincoln County at the Oregon State Fair. There are still a few 4 hour shifts available for folks to man the booth. If you are interested, call the Chamber office at 265-2064.
YARD CREW
In addition to those mentioned last month, we understand the yard crew has expanded to include, Glen and Shirley Paradis, Dee and Charlene Shimek, Don and Joy Newman, and Charles and Frida Burke.
We appreciate the efforts of these folks to help make the yards of Longview Hills look beautiful.
