PCH INFORMATION MEETING

On Wednesday, November 5th, several representatives from the Pacific Communities Hospital presented a seminar at the LVH Clubhouse on items of interest to older Americans or the "Gray Generation". Thanks to all residents for the good turnout. Hopefully, most of your questions were answered. Approximately 50 people attended the 1 ½ hour session and several folks dropped in to listen to their topic of interest and then left. What a great opportunity to get useful information from respected, knowledgeable people and there was no catch. No one was selling anything or trying to convince you to invest in any venture.
Linda Bailey, a Patient Accounts Representative from PCH, provided valuable handouts and shared numerous local and national phone numbers to assist in muddling through the mountain of paperwork associated with Medicare.
Marilyn Williams, a representative of West Coast Bank, talked on the "Do's and Don'ts" of purchasing Long Term Care Insurance. She shared information on what to look for in a policy and the pitfalls to avoid.
Lastly, Richard Kilbride, a local attorney, spoke on Wills vs Trusts. He shared how and when each was appropriate, cost associated with each, what was acceptable and what should be avoided. He fielded numerous questions on this topic and helped us to understand and simplify some legal terminology.
The information received, during the 1 ½ hour session, would equate to days or even weeks of research. The nice thing, it was all FREE! I believe each person left with knowledge they had not arrived with.
I am looking forward to the next meeting, which will be in January 2004. The date and topics will be announced later in December. The next meeting will again have three speakers, knowledgeable in their field, on topics different from those presented at the November meeting. If you were not able to attend the first meeting, don't miss the next one. You will be amazed at what you can learn.

USED CARDS COLLECTION

Thompson’s Sanitary is again this year collecting used cards for St. Jude’s Ranch for abused children. The cards are shipped to the ranch where they are made into new cards to help the children.
Please submit the FRONTS OF THE CARDS ONLY. They can be Christmas, birthday, etc., any type of card. Put them in the box on the table. They are collecting only until January 9th, 2004. Thank You.

SOCIAL CLUB

A discussion was held about the times that the gate is open and Larry Henson clarified the hours of operation. The gate currently opens between 6:00 and 6:30 AM and it closes between 6:30 and 7:00 PM. Those present agreed that the current hours were acceptable.

There are some committees, which had been in place at one time, but were no longer active. Donna is to post a list of these committees so that residents could see if any are of interest to them and should be resurrected.

Bill Hanus presented information about the Izzys’ coupon book that had been discussed at a prior meeting. Izzys was willing to let residents sell the books as long as it was to be a charitable endeavor. It was agreed that the club would buy the books and sell them for $5.00. Half of the profits would be used to fund a charitable cause and the other half to benefit LVH residents.

Don Newman and Dan Wilson presented their report about the need for new chairs at the clubhouse. There are 26 chairs in disrepair. They discovered that it is less expensive to buy new chairs than to recover or repair them. There is a budget of $200 for replacement. Prices are being investigated.

Don’t forget to attend the Ladies Coffee on Tuesday, December 30th, at 10 AM. This is a wonderful opportunity to get acquainted with other ladies in the community.

HOLIDAY ARRANGEMENT MAKING CLASS

Two of our residents were professional florists during their working careers, Sue Wilson and Jacky Thomas. They thought it would be fun to have a class on making a holiday arrangement for your home. Both of our ladies have worked extensively for florists and are graciously bringing their expertise to a free class at the clubhouse.
Materials will be garnered from the forrest and off unsuspecting neighbors pine trees. Using these native plants, students will fashion a centerpiece that will be able to last for a month if it is kept watered.
Bring your favorite wine or beverage because it will be absolutely necessary to keep the students and instuctors as well watered as the plants they are working on.
The arrangement class by Sue and Jacky will be held at the clubhouse at 3:00 PM, December 8th. Bring scissors, and a small sharp knife, small Christmas pics, and $1.00 for material. Sign up on the clubhouse bulletin board.

A WORD FROM THE CHAIR

Being the Chair of the Social Club is likened to riding a roller coaster. When I accepted the opportunity, I was told the total attendance per meeting would be below 10 people. We have enjoyed between 25 and 35 people at each of the last 3 meetings. At the November meeting, 7 new residents were actively participating in the discussion.
I am so grateful for the support, guidance, and patience received from all residents. I learn from each meeting and take from it the good and try to correct or change the format of future meetings to better fit the needs of our community. I am not well versed on Roberts Rule of Order and oftentimes it is a challenge to know when to vote, how to control the sidebar discussion, and what to do to keep order while not offending everyone. However, I know I can look to certain people in attendance for guidance. I sincerely hope the attendance continues to grow and when I hand the gravel to the next Chair, I can say that our regular attendance is up to one member from each household.
I started out by saying that being Chair is likened to riding a roller coaster; the ride is short, fun and full of surprises. At times there will be ups and downs, but working together we will all benefit. I am most grateful for all of the good people who live in LVH.

CHRISTMAS TREE
DECORATING PARTY

Our annual Christmas Tree Decorating Party will take place on Saturday, December 6th, at 4:00 PM at the clubhouse. This year, a generous donation was made by Leonard & Rusty Johnson, who are. paying for the entire cost of the tree.
WE REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR THOUGHTFULNESS!
For anyone new to LVH, tradition is for each family, who has not previously attended, to bring an ornament for the tree, with your name and the date you moved into the park written on the ornament. It can be a new, purchased ornament or a home-made one, whichever you prefer. It will be placed on the tree along with those of other residents. After Christmas, they are all kept together until the following year, when we again decorate a tree.
Please bring an hors-d'oeuvre and whatever you wish to drink, along with your ornament. See you there!

FRAUD, SCAMS AND THEFT

A speaker from the Oregon Justice Department will be at LVH on February 6, 2004 to address the growing concern of Identity Theft, how to prevent it, and what to do if you become a victim. She will also address "How to Avoid Scams and Frauds." Mark your calendars for this important presentation. Additional details will be published in coming issues of this newsletter and will be posted at the clubhouse.

PROTECT YOUR INFORMATION

Google has implemented a new feature wherein you can type someone's telephone number into the search bar and hit enter and then you will be given a map to their house. Check it out. Go to: www.google.com. Type your telephone number in the search bar with dashes (i.e. 555-555-1212) and hit enter. This will divulge your name and address. You will see a link option to the right for Mapquest (click on it), which will use the address to provide a map to your home. Think about it--if a child, single person, ANYONE gives out his/her phone number, someone can actually now look it up to find out where he/she lives. The safety issues are obvious, and alarming. This is not a hoax. Mapquest will put a star on your house on your street.
If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging your private information, simply click on the telephone icon next to your phone number. If you want to remove your telephone number, it takes 48 hours. If you are unlisted in the phone book, you might not be in there, but it is a good idea just to check.

CHRISTMAS POTLUCK

Because Jacky Thomas thinks no one should be alone on Christmas, she has reserved the clubhouse for a Christmas Potluck to begin at 1:00 PM on Christmas Day. Don’t be lonely. Come and join with your neighbors, who may be alone also, and enjoy the day together.

FOOD SHARE

This has been another record breaking month at Lincoln County Food Share. Thank you good folks at LVH for all the food you have donated. Other people who have helped are the school children at Newport Middle and High School plus children at Sam Case Elementary who collected more than 1,000 pounds of food at each school.
Lincoln County Food Share dispensed in excess of 50,000 pounds of food in the months of October and November this year. Inventories are at an all time low and Food Share can always use help. $1.00 buys 7 pounds of food from the Oregon Food Bank.

HELPFUL HINTS

I’ve had a few requests in recent weeks to revive a column I used to write for the newsletter. Most of the hints I write about help homeowners recognize and correct potential problems in their manufactured homes and avoid the need for expensive service calls.
My advice for this month is to be sure your garden hose reels are disconnected from the outside hose bibs - allowing them to drain. The hose bib itself is a "deep throated" shut-off and does not need to be covered, as long as it has not been rotated, so it cannot drain. Hoses should also be drained and any sprinkling device removed from the end.
Now is a good time to check your furnace filter located over the fan housing. Most filters are replaceable 16" x 20" x 1" disposable type available at WalMart. The cardboard frame around the filter has an arrow on it. The filter needs to be installed with the arrow pointing down. Some furnaces came with a washable filter, usually green or blue course material. Just wash and reinstall. The fan is a direct drive (no belt) and also self-oiling.
For proper heat distribution, partially close the floor vents nearest the furnace and open wide the ones farthest away. If you have a ceiling fan, it helps to run it in reverse on low speed to keep heat from accumulating at the ceiling.

FAVORITE RECIPES

Hi! My name is Donna Davi and I am a new resident of Longview Hills. I thought it would be interesting to publish Favorite Recipes in the Newsletter, so I am starting with this month's issue.
The recipe I am submitting was taught to me by my Mother-In-Law. She didn't really measure, so you will have to guess at some of the quantities. This is for homemade Raviolis (dough and stuffing). She was Sicilian, so this particular recipe may be different from what you are used to. If you have any questions, my phone is 265-2104.

If you have a favorite recipe that you would like to share, please submit it, along with an explanation of where and/or whom you received it from and any other background you may wish to include. Place the above information in Donna Davi's box (#19) by the 20th of the month. Donna will type up the information and submit it to the editor for the following month's newsletter. If several recipes are received in a month, yours may be published at a later date.

NANA'S RAVIOLI RECIPE

DOUGH:
4 Sifters of Flour (approx. 8 Cups)
1 Tablespoon of Salt
6 Eggs
Water enough to mix flour (lukewarm)

Put flour in a large pan. Make a well. Beat eggs and add to flour. Work flour and eggs together, add lukewarm water and mix together and work down the flour dough well. Make about 4 to 6 balls and start rolling with a rolling pin and spread dough as large as you can make it. Fold in half to make a center crease, unfold back and start putting the filling from center out, then fold the other half, and roll with ravioli shaper and cut with ravioli cutter.

FILLING:

8 Eggs
8 to 10 Bunches of Spinach or Swiss Chard
4 lbs. Ground Beef
2 to 3 Medium size Onions
2 Tbls. Parsley
1/2 to 3/4 Cups Grating Cheese
1/2 Cup Bread Crumbs

Clean your greens, get the leafy parts of the greens and cook, season with salt and to your taste. Cook about 5 minutes for spinach and about 15 minutes for chard. Drain well.
Brown in skillet, onions first until slightly brown. Add parsley, brown a little longer about 1 minute. Put this in a bowl. Then brown your ground beef in same skillet, into a hash manner. Add that into bowl. Chop down your cooked veg. And add into the bowl. Add about half to 3/4 cups of grating cheese and less of bread crumbs, about half a cup. Add salt and pepper and cool. When its cold, beat the 8 eggs and add to the moisture and stir well to the consistency to spread on dough. This serves about 24 people.

Step 2: Know the Right Words
Avoid getting on mailing lists. Whenever you submit your name and address to anyone, add the phrase, "Please do not rent, sell, or trade my name or address" next to the other information you provide. Repeat these same words every time you order over the phone.

Step 3: 1-800 No Thanks
As soon as you receive a publication in the mail you don't want, call the 1 800 number located somewhere on the piece and ask to be removed from the mailing list (They will need information from the label on the catalog).

Step 4: End Credit Card Solicitations
To eliminate credit card promotional mailings, call 1-888-567-8688. To ensure permanent removal of your name, ask for the special form available for this purpose.

Step 5: Stop Junk Promo Products
If companies send you products you don't want, get a Form 1500 from the Post Office. By filling out the form and attaching the specific piece of junk mail you want stopped, a company becomes criminally liable if it continues to send you mail or to sell your personal data to others.

Step 6: Cover All the Direct Marketers
There are several smaller list brokers and direct marketing firms. Save the labels of all variations of names and addresses which come in the mail. Cut and paste actual mailing labels onto a sheet, make copies, add your signature beside each name variation on each sheet, and send them to each of the addresses below. Indicate: "Please remove my name and address from your mailing lists and do not rent, sell or trade my name or address."
To save time go to www.newdream.org where the letters have already been written - all you need to do is enter your name and address. It takes 3-6 months to see a mail reduction.

ADOPT A FAMILY

Please join others in the Longview Hills community in making this a very special Christmas for a needy family. A Newport family, consisting of a single mother, a 9 year old boy and a 15 year old boy, was located through the Lincoln County School District.
Donations may consist of either a gift for one or both of the boys, or a cash donation which will be used to purchase gifts. The mother has requested that no gifts be purchased for her. If you wish to offer a cash donation, please contact one of the persons on the committee listed below. We will be happy to come by your home and pick up your donation.
If you would like to purchase a gift, please take a paper ornament marked" Adopt a Family" from below the poster of the same name on the bulletin board in the clubhouse. On it you will find "boy, age 9" or "boy, age 15". A specific gift request will be noted on the ornament. Please purchase the gift, wrap it, and place it in the large cardboard box marked "ADOPT A FAMILY", provided at the clubhouse. Make sure you attach the paper ornament to the package securely, so that we can make tags for the appropriate person. All gifts and cash donations should be turned in not later than 5:00 PM on Monday, Dec. 15th. Members of the committee will deliver the gifts to the family before Christmas.
This family is our primary focus. However, there is another family we have been made aware of, with 3 and 7 year old boys who are also in need. If you feel that you want to purchase a gift for one of these children, we have the following information: The 3 year old wears a size 5T, and the 7 year old wears a medium size shirt and pants. This is strictly a voluntary donation. The project was undertaken by several residents of this park. We thank all of you who choose to participate. Have a blessed Christmas!

LOANER MEDICAL EQUIPMENT

Since we have many new residents and have not mentioned this information for quite some time, we thought we would include it here.
We have medical equipment for loan in the stock room of the clubhouse. There are: two walkers, a footed cane, crutches, two bath chairs, a foot tent, back rest and raised toilet seat.
If you would like to make a donation to our collection, please call Betty Hanus at 265-7433. If you currently have any of our medical equipment out on loan, please let Betty Hanus know, so we know where all of our equipment is and who is using it.
