You...Your Future and Health Care

A forum featuring issues of the Sandwich Generation will continue Tuesday, April 13th at the Longview Hills Community Center. The three part presentation is informal and will be held from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM with a period set aside for questions. Admission is free and sponsored by Pacific Communities Health District Foundation. Reservations are not necessary.

This is the third in a series of informative presentations discussing planning and health care issues for older adults. Guest speakers include Sharon Sundwall, RN from the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at SPCH. She will talk about heart healthy issues, including signs and symptoms of a cardiac event and steps in the recovery from a heart attack or surgery. Sharon will also discuss the companion program, Pulmonary Rehabilitation and its benefits to the patient managing chronic lung disease.

"Nutrition and the Elderly" will be presented by Karen Kozick, who is a Registered Dietitian at Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital. Karen has been Certified by the American Diabetes Association. She will show how the dietary pyramid has been adjusted for the older adult with specific requirements in the area of nutrients and fluids. Karen will discuss general dietary tips for a healthy lifestyle and the prevention of common chronic diseases.

John Baker is from NW Management Specialists. One of his favorite topics is "The Psychology of the Golden Years - Retirement Planning." John has a rich background in education and travels throughout the nation consulting with businesses and individuals. A well-known participant in the community, he will share with us one of his favored guidelines for tracking your own family history.

The Pacific Communities Health District Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of medical care and health-related programs for the communities of South Lincoln County. As a tax-exempt organization, it accepts donations that are used for the direct support of the Health District in partnership with Samaritan Pacific Health Services and its programs. PLAN AHEAD

UNO de MAYO, a Mexican Potluck, will be held at the club house on Saturday, May 1st at 6:30 PM. Bring your super delicious Mexican entre' and place settings, including silverware and drinks. There is a private function at the clubhouse from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM that day, so plan your arrival accordingly.

LONGVIEW HILLS
SOCIAL CLUB

There is an ongoing discussion regarding the time of the gate closure, and if it is time to change the code. Ron Thomas suggested a remote opener for residents who may wish to have one. He will investigate cost.

We are responsible for replacing club house equipment and we need new furniture. Bill Hanus reported on the possibility of selling Izzy’s coupon books as an ongoing fund raiser.

Each house should be marked with the address painted on the curbing which can be easily seen by emergency personel. Ron Thomas and Jim Rose will work with volunteers to get this done for a nominal fee to the homeowner. There will be a sign-up sheet for those who would like to have their house number painted on the curb.

Three new bookcases will be purchased and placed in the Craft Room for videos and extra books.

We have one new breakfast committee. Thanks to all volunteers.

Due to problems arising from having newsletters in the LVH boxes, the newsletters will be placed on the mail table where each family can pick one up each month.

WELCOME COMMITTEE

Jack and Ginny Scherer, along with Buzzy Byerrum and Bob Abbott, welcomed the following new residents to Longview Hills during the month of March.
Ramon and Paula Ramos came to the Oregon Coast from Kent, WA and are making their new home at 509 NE 58th St. (#30).
If you know of any new neighbors moving into your area, please contact Jack & Ginny at 265-5529 and pass the information on to them.
If you are new to the park and have not received a visit from the Welcome Committee, please call Jack & Ginny. They have names of new people, but have been unable to contact them because they lack additional information.
Block Captains, please look out for new people and get information to Jack & Ginny. By working together, we can see that all new residents who wish to have a call from the Welcome Committee will receive one.

SALVATION ARMY/FOOD SHARE

After last month's big report on Food Share and Salvation Army, I again want to say thanks to all who have dropped items in the box under the table in the clubhouse. Keep up the good work.

HELPFUL HINTS

For those who are recent arrivals in this area, these comments might be helpful. There is just enough salt in the air here to cause a couple of problems. One is, it can cause the sensitive devices that protect the electric plugs in the garages to shut down the plugs. Ours has shut down at least 4 times in 13 years. This means that freezers put in the garage are at risk. An electrician can pull in extra wires and create a special purpose outlet for a freezer or refrigerator.
Another problem with the salt is its ability to rust out the metal garage doors. It took only 4 years for the top panel of our garage to fall victim. The bottom panels were not affected. It seems there was enough rain water hitting the bottom panels to wash away the salt. The "door man" in Lincoln City replaced our panel, but had to charge a labor fee of $75. He urges us to hit the panels with a garden hose about 3 times a year. Hope you find these hints helpful.

LEE SEZ

All of the early Golden West homes, we put in here, came equipped with Price/Pfister faucets. These, for the most part, were pretty trouble-free faucets. All of the single lever or knob, as the case may be, used the same. neoprene control cartridge. They work easily as long as they are kept properly lubricated. Unfortunately, our water supply has enough chlorine in it that, over time, it tends to scrup the lubricant out of it and gradually cause you to have to exert more force to operate it. If this condition is allowed to persist over a long period, the.cartridge will be damaged and have to be replaced or rebuilt with a seal kit. But usually, these faucets can be restored to almost new working order by simply cleaning and re-lubing the necessary parts with a special silicone, water-proof grease.
Later on, Golden West switched the kitchen faucet set to one made by a subsidiary of the Delta Co. These use a ball configuration sitting on top of two, spring-loaded thimble-like neoprene seals. They tend to work easily and hold up well. However, they do need to be lubed occasionally too. Repair parts for these.faucets are more readily available and easy to instaIl. The most troublesome part of these faucets seems to be the ones that have a separate sprayer attachment. For some reason, the small poppet valve, that controls the sprayer, will either start to leak or stop functioning altogether. That's usually when folks just replace the whole shebang.
I was really surprised recently to find that some of the early homes we put in, ('88-'92) still had their small, gray plastic shut-offs on the water supply lines to the faucets and toilets. We've had some bad experiences with these valves bursting and flooding the house.
My co-hort and I embarked on a campaign, several years ago, to get the homeowners to let us replace these valves, but we evidently didn't catch all of them. The plastic valves are definitely a hazard you don't want to live with, as there is no way of knowing when they're going to fail. When they burst, the handle and stem separate from the valve body and there is no way to shut off the water flow, except to turn it off at the meter. These valves can be easily identified by their bluish-gray color. They are only ONE-QUARTER TURN from stop to stop and are entirely plastic. If your home still has these valves and you need more information on them, please feel free to call me and I'll be glad to discuss it with you or come by and confirm your find.

BEREAVEMENT COMMITTEE

A new bereavement committee has been set up to minister to the immediate needs of our LVH residents. The purpose is twofold. First, we want our residents to know that their neighbors care for them and their families. Secondly, we want to provide immediate help during a time of chaos and confusion.
Please notify either Jacky Thomas (265-5546), Kathy Furgason (574-6056),or Bonnie Rose (574-6546) as soon as you hear of a death in our park. One of us will then put a notice on the door of the clubhouse, nearest the mailboxes. It will give information about the deceased and give you the opportunity to donate to a fund, used to purchase food and a plant for the family. A food tray may include meats, cheeses, bread, crackers, etc., and possibly a large pan of lasagna or other item. This is to provide immediate help to the family, as other family and friends usually arrive within a short time, and we don't want anyone to have to worry about having to fix a meal or snacks when other more important things are necessary. This program is ENTIRELY voluntary.
If you wish to contribute, you will be asked to place your cash donation in a sealed envelope, and place in a particular numbered cubby hole in the mailroom. Then, someone on the committee will purchase the food and plant and deliver to the family within 24 hours. Any donation of $1-$5 would help toward the cost of these items. Cost for the food and a plant usually run approximately $60. If any money is left over after the purchase of these items, those monies will go into a bereavement fund to be used for future families, if needed.
Some of us have been doing this over the past few months, and felt maybe others in the park might welcome the opportunity to be a part of this mission.
Please be aware that there are also volunteers in the park who will coordinate a memorial at the clubhouse for your loved one, should you need that service. If you contact us with a request for such a service, we will pass the information on to those who volunteer in that area. Thank you for your support.

NOTIFICATION CHAIN

There were those who were not aware of the announced water shut-off recently. For this reason, we are instituting a new chain to see that all residents are informed. The chain will begin when Larry Henson, Manager, informs Jackie Memoli who will, in turn, notify Block Captains who will notify everyone on their block. A sign about any emergency will (as always) be posted on the LVH clubhouse door.

BAY & RIVER CRUISE

Please join some of your neighbors on a fun and informative Yaquina Bay and River Cruise Friday, May 21st, from 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM. Marine Discovery Tours (the official cruise company of the Oregon Coast Aquarium) is offering the two hour cruise on its 65 foot flagship, the Discovery. You will be comfortable in a well-heated cabin, with seating for 49 passengers, and enjoy upper and lower viewing decks, as well. (Don't forget your camera!)
Naturalist guides will provide stories of our historic, coastal community, as well as information about the creatures that live both above and under the water.
Refreshments are also available. A group rate of $24 per person is being offered. If you are interested, please contact Kathy Furgason (574-6056) not later than April 22nd. All monies must be received by 5:00 PM, April 30th. If paying by check, please make the check out to Kathy Furgason. I will then make one check out to Marine Discovery Tours for the total amount due. Seats are limited, so please don't hesitate!

LADIES COFFEE

Don’t forget the Ladies Coffee on Tuesday, April 27th, at 10:00 AM. This is a wonderful opportunity to get acquainted with other ladies in the community.

FUND RAISER COORDINATOR

LVH needs to fill this position. You ask why another coordinator? The residents will soon be placed in a position of replacing needed furniture or equipment at the clubhouse. Since we have no governing body to impose fees on residents, the Social Club is proactively trying to raise money to build a fund to be readily available when the need occurs. Bill Hanus was able to secure for the LVH Social Club, Izzy’s coupon books to sell.
This is a win-win situation. We will sell the books for $5.00. They are a $50.00 value at Izzy’s. Four dollars will go to local charities, such as Samaritan House, Food Share, etc. and $1.00 of the profit stays with the LVH residents. At first glance this doesn't sound like much, but we are looking at this being a long-term project. When we sell 1,000 books, that is $1,000 in our coffers and, better yet, $4,000 to donate. When you see Bill Hanus give him a pat on the back and a hand shake for all his tenacious work.
Now to the subject at hand. We need someone who will lead this project. Bill has done the groundwork and will work with Izzy’s to get the books. We already have several folks willing to be helpers. However, we need someone organized and detailed to coordinate the receipt of money and process the orders. We will have many people involved in the selling. Call me at 265-5530 for further details. This is a worthwhile cause.
