Next month will be the one year anniversary of my taking over as editor so it is time to consider how effective I have been in providing the service that the Social Club Board has expected. As you all know the Newsletter does not arrive in your box out of clear air but it is the culmination of contributions by many of your neighbors, for instance:
JOHN (WIZARD) FORSLOFF and his magic machine who and which print each edition at cost. This means that printing runs about fifty dollars a month, a saving of about three fourth over the commercial rate.
RON and JACKY THOMAS, who contribute the calendar, information about the activities of the CERT team and other activities.
GINGER DALE WHO DOES THE Birthday page in addition to other contributions.
JEAN and JIM HART who do the Sunshine page and find advertisers.
BARB DUDLEY who writes THE LINE column.
All the folks who have contributed stories, jokes and other suggestions.
Last, but not least, THE ADVERTISERS.
It has been troubling to me that each month at least a third of the newsletters remain in the boxes for a week or more an observation which was mentioned to Chairman Wade with the suggestion that he discuss this with the Social Club Board. See discussion below.
Charlie Currey was unable to attend the meeting but had requested a discussion on the Newsletter. He advised Wayde that there were always several copies still in the mail boxes for weeks after printing of the newsletter. It was decided that 100 copies of the newsletter would be printed and put on the table by the mail boxes for people interested in reading them. Carmen Dean suggested we could also recycle them by putting them back in the box after we read them. Everyone was in agreement. It was also suggested we condense the Newsletter to save space. A question came up about items not on the printed calendar. Ron Thomas stated that because the calendar had to be submitted early in order to make the printing of the Newsletter, often items will come up later. Everyone can always check the LVH Website for a current calendar. He also stated it would be beneficial to get the Newsletter on-line for people who are out of town.
So there you have it folks. The single purpose of the newsletter is to provide information about actions and activities of the Social Club plus a few announcements considered essential to the health and welfare of residents of LVH. This is not my vision but then perhaps I have been overreaching. J
Minutes from Social Club meeting of September
The meeting was called to order by Wayde Dudley, Chairman, at 4:06 p.m., with 19 residents in attendance.
The minutes were approved as read from the July 16, 2007 meeting. There was no Social Club Meeting in August.
Virginia Dale gave the Treasurer’s Report. There is a balance of $4,233, with $289 dedicated to the CERT budget.
Jacky Thomas stated there had been T-Shirt painting today and there will be a Pampered Chef party in October. There are no other activities planned at this time.
Chairman Dudley reported that there is now a new popcorn machine as the old one finally broke beyond repair. The cost was $369 which included shipping. The important thing is Milt likes it.
Ron Thomas gave the CERT report:
· They are now learning the Incident Command system where the group learns to operate as a team.
· They are in the process of building their own team first aid kits. They need several kits as there are 265 residents of Longview Hills. Ron showed a sample of some of the items to go in the kits.
· All CERT members are now certified in CPR, AED and first aid, the only CERT group in the area to have done that. They are also the only team in the area who meets once a week.
· Ron was able to get 9 splints donated for free from Sam’s Place.
· Ron submitted an application for a grant from the Siletz Tribe for $2,000 for a new AED.
· There are 4 current members who will start training this week to become certified CERT members.
After discussion of the balance in the treasury it was decided we would raise the cost of the monthly breakfasts from $3.50 to $4.00 to help cover the expenses. Breakfast will still be free to those with Activity Cards. It was moved by Jacky Thomas, seconded by Bev Garvey, and passed with a unanimous vote.
Chairman Dudley mentioned the fact that several items consistently disappear from the refrigerator in the Clubhouse. A motion was made by Midge Southwell and seconded by Don Newman that a lock be put on one of the refrigerators for use by the LVH Social Club only. The vote was passed unanimously.
Chairman Dudley reported that Lincoln County Health Department has advised him that the date now scheduled for flu shots is November 7th, 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. The cost will be +/- $28 for the flu shot and +/-$41 for the pneumonia shot. There will be a notice reminding everyone of this date or any change in date or time.
Wayde Dudley stated Samaritan Hospital will present a Family Tree Workshop on October 29th from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. A reminder notice of this event will be posted.
Chairman Dudley brought up the need to get started on the Christmas Family project. It was decided we would support 2 families this year. Ginger Dale and Barbara Dudley will be in charge with help from Marlene Crites, Carmen and Bobby Dean.
Chairman Dudley stated the Fall Dinner would be November 10th. The LVH Social Club will cook the turkeys and everything else will be pot luck. There will be a sign up sheet.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:40 p.m.

Private use of Clubhouse!
The clubhouse at Longview Hills is available for any resident to use with permission from management. Sometimes people who schedule a private event at the Clubhouse assume they are able to use anything in the clubhouse for their event. Anyone is welcome to use items that are non disposable, like dishes, glasses and some of the cooking utensils. These things should be cleaned and returned to the spot they came from. Other items, such as coffee, creamer, sweetener, paper plates, napkins, place mats, tablecloths, plastic wrap, foil, salt, pepper, other condiments, etc. are purchased by the social club for the exclusive use of events for residents of LVH. Some residents have mistakenly thought these things were provided by the management, but they are not. Let's all try to honor this in the future!! _____________________________________
