FROM THE EDITOR:

Our little experiment of last month revealed some interesting information. We were not exactly deluged with calls demanding to know what was going on but we did find that sentiment ran from complete indifference through umbrage all the way to outrage. Unfortunately more indifference than outrage but that was not totally unexpected. So what now?

For the immediate future there will be only 100 hard copies printed. They will be placed, in a box, next to your wooden mail boxes.

A copy of the newsletter will be available on the LVH website for all

who have access to that.

The columns to which you have become accustomed will still be there

Stories which have been submitted for publication will be limited to one sheet, both sides.

The editor is happy to accept, for all who contribute to this newsletter, the encouraging comments, notes, calls and conversations which were received. There you are folks, your work is appreciated so we shall continue our efforts.

A reminder, every one of us who reside in LVH is a member of the Social Committee. It is our intention to encourage participation by everyone in the activities fostered by your elected board.

We have been told that we could increase our readership, among the ladies, if we ran some love stories and so we shall. We shall also keep them mercifully short! Tales of unrequited love seem the most poignant of the ilk so our first story this month is of that genre. Play fair now ladies, do not turn to the story until you have read the important parts of this newsletter. Also don’t forget that you still have dinner to prepare.

THE LINE FOR OCTOBER

Our first meeting of October was the breakfast meeting at the Agate Beach Golf Course. We have had an on-going project of helping ODFW at the Siletz Fish Trap, with several hundred steelhead and salmon recorded in the past weeks. Also, several of our members helped with the U-DA-MAN Fishing Tournament. The actual Tournament was October 14th but the LVH Fishing Club helped with cleaning up of the dock area, setting up and taking down the tents for the tournament as well as helping at the Tournament. We had a guest speaker at the meeting on October 18^th. Stephanie Payne, a Riparian Technician with the Lincoln County Soil & Water Conservation District spoke to our Club about invasive plant species in our Oregon coastal area. Also, we will be starting up monitoring the Schooner Creek Fish Trap this month. MEMBER OF THE MONTH: I knew it would have to come up sooner or later but I feel the time has come for me to sing the accolades of The Surveyor, Wayde Dudley. I may be a little prejudiced but I feel he has not only provided our group with some interesting programs and helped with ideas for projects for our Club, but that he is always willing to volunteer when and where he is able. More important to me, though, is that he is always supportive of whatever I do and “graciously” helps out when I volunteer his services. You’re a good man, Wayde Dudley! If you like visiting good friends and learning something new along the way, please be sure to come to our meetings. Remember, you don’t have to be a member to attend and you do not even have to like to fish to become a member.

LONGVIEW HILLS SOCIAL CLUB MEETINGOctober 15, 2007

The meeting was called to order by Wayde Dudley, Chairman, at 4:07 p.m., with 19 residents in attendance.The minutes were read from the September 17, 2007 meeting with following corrections:$5.00 charge for breakfast will start January 1^stFall Dinner will be more than potluck

Jacky Thomas gave the following activities report:

· Buzzy Byerrum has wreaths for sale with some displayed today.

· There will be a Halloween potluck. Jacky will do poster.

· Ideas for fundraisers:

1. Ron Thomas can teach class on how to make personal calendars for Christmas

· Have brunch in December. Charge $6.00 with each cooking crew cooking two items

· Casino night has been postponed. Possibly have it on New Year’s Eve (on this note Nancy Lee stated she has a slot machine for sale but we can use it in Casino Night)

· Ron Thomas suggested having a Texas Hold’Em game on Friday night Game Night

· More t-shirt painting classes for Christmas

· Home Decorating Party on November 6^th at 2:00 p.m.

· Ginger Dale suggested having a quilting class

· Barb is in catering again. It was suggested maybe she could replace Hart breakfast. Jacky will put up poster if this happens

Wayde gave the Treasurer’s Report. There is $4,200 in the treasury with $2,700 in CD’s. Ginger also told Wayde she will have the Christmas Family soon and the information will be posted before the November Social Club Meeting. It was stated we should also look into helping a military family.

Lest anyone assume that the editor has a predilection for ranting about the POOP issue I promise this is our last reference.

We all have experienced the embarrassment of finding ourselves bag less when our critter decides to do its business. Jo Ann has the perfect solution so look at her ad on the bulletin board. Give her a call at 574-6789. WHAT A WONDERFUL IDEA!

Note To A Special Person.

You were seen picking up after your dog. Congratulations but it was really tacky to throw the bag into the bushes. TSK TSK TSK.

On a much brighter note.

The Geezers Group sends best wishes to Jack Pyle and Frank Mazzeo who are both home after some hellish time in the hospital. Hurry back guys, before Charley eats all the cookies.

We have a note from Anita Blower and Carrie McVey thanking all their friends and supporters in LVH who were so kind at the time of Jacks death. Your caring was much appreciated.

Frank Mazzeo, Marian Rogers, Leona Teilmann and Ed Simon were all sent cards this month.

Hello Charley, The Clan sends greetings. We have noticed that there is a large, ring tailed gray cat roaming your park. We salivate in anticipation of removing said delicacy from your area. We wait only for the full of the moon .Thank you.

A Love Story

Part One

I am in love. The object of my infatuation is everything that I am not. She is big and bold and brassy. She smokes constantly. When she is impatient she hisses in a most alarming manner. She is black, a beautiful, shining black, a color one does not see in our colorless and dying village. She never notices me but I am convinced that somehow I can gain her attention.

I am in love. I am five years old and in love with the steam engine that roars through our village every afternoon. I and most of the villagers would go down to the station to greet this monster which seldom stopped but slowed just enough to grab a mailbag from the cross arm and heave another bag onto the platform. I was convinced that if I would but stand on the tracks this prairie runner would stop, take me aboard and whisk me off to some magical place. So sure was I that more than once some interfering stranger would snatch me out of harm’s way.

Over the years I had just enough contact with railroads to keep my interest alive until the demise of steam and the end of real railroading. One episode had to do with all of the passengers piling out to gawk at the sight of seven navy destroyers piled up on the rocks of Point Sal in California, an unplanned but memorable example of follow the leader.

During my working years trains and busses were all too slow to be considered. At that stage the destination was all important and the journey was incidental. That is all reversed and now the journey is more important than the destination, the train is the way to go. True, rail travel is a pale image of the heady days of steam. Long gone the lonesome whistle, the clickity clack of the rails and the lovely odor of burning coal when the cars filled with smoke going through the tunnels.

A Love Story Continued

Still there is the excitement of travel to a distant place, the carefree feeling of no other responsibility than that of enjoying the ride, looking at the scenery and choosing which of the menu items to enjoy.

So in that frame of mind, it was once again time to board Amtrak to Seattle to spend Thanksgiving. Forget traveling coach. One needs to stretch out and besides when you rent a roomette your meals are included. Amtrak food has improved greatly, the servings are still too large but you can have more than one desert. Having some of your meals brought to your roomette is fun and very posh, if you don’t get a grumpy attendant. Ours was great, a sunny and outgoing disposition and a very helpful person.

One great thing about travel by train is the freedom to really see the scenery. You see so much more than traveling by car as the additional height gives an entirely different perspective. True the tracks often pass by the junk yards and other run down sections but in the country it is great. Of course this time of year the days are so short that one is apt to miss a lot of the best scenery both coming and going Thanks to being two hours late did see Shasta at sunrise and it was gorgeous.

The area from Klamath Falls and over the Cascades is always interesting and sometimes beautiful. On the way up it was dreary but by the time we had returned it had snowed and even though dark it was lovely in the moonlight. Another beautiful section is the ride along the shore of Puget Sound from Seattle to Olympia with the Olympics glistening in the distance. Not nice to say but the more rainy or snowy it is the more one can appreciate the ride. Sitting by that big window with a cup of hot coffee and a fresh cookie one revels in not suffering the discomfort of all those little people huddling on the platforms. Lovely, lovely, what a life!

Suddenly it is all over, the destination has been reached, two hours late, always two hours late. Rump sprung but happy one returns to the real world.

Travel by train? You should try it. It is the only way to go.
