Minutes - Social Club - February 18, 2009
Meeting was called to order by President Charlotte Paulsen at 4.p.m.. There were 15 people in attendance.
Minutes of the last meeting were ready by Secretary, Jeannine Roederer and approved as read.
Bob Dean, read the treasurers report and it was accepted as read.
Ron Thomas gave us his report on CERT activities. Quite a few of the CERT members attended a training session where they received recertification on AED and CPR training. The trainer donated “mouth protectors when using CPR, and she will give us training aids for future practice with the AED. Ron also, spoke about the upcoming event here at LVH entitled “Oregon Shakes.” This program should be attended by everyone in this complex because it can give you an idea of what can happen in an earthquake.
Another subject discussed at the meeting concerns our FRS radios. We want every one to start getting on the NET every Sunday night at 7 p.m. You can not know if your equipment is working properly or if you remember how to use your radio if you don’t get on the air and practice.. . So every Sunday try to remember to turn on your radio and get on the net.. The “net control operator is lonely when we get so few remembering. So try to not forget the net. A reminder will be placed on the club house door each Saturday.
Coming events:
1. March 11 - Spaghetti dinner $4 - drinks at 5:00 & dinner at 6p.m.
2. March 17 - Pot luck dinner -sign up sheet will be on bulletin board

THE LINE
We had our monthly breakfast meeting at the Agate Beach Golf Course on February 5th. A special member, Phil Reed, was there to explain about a very special gift he was donating to the LVH Fishing Club.Special as in some member, whose name was to be drawn that morning, would be the lucky recipient of a fishing trip with Phil! Our favorite waitress, Mary, drew the lucky ticket from the can and newcomer Matt Matheny proudly displayed the winning ticket stub.Needless to say, he was very excited. We would all like to once again thank Phil for his generosity.Ellie LeMaster was introduced as the new LVH Fishing Club “Beach Mistress”.She has graciously offered to be in charge of our quarterly Beverly Beach cleanup. Thanks for stepping up, Ellie. It’s people like her and Phil Reed who help make our Club so special. At our general membership meeting on the 19th of February we had a special program with Ryan Miner.Ryan’s programs are always greatly received and enjoyed by our membership. He showed us many lures and gave several “hints” on ways to catch fish.As a strictly non-professional fishing person, I liked the pink puff balls with the shiny silver stuff (but what do I know). We also heard about Matt and Bill Furgason’s fishing trip with Phil, which was a great success. Thanks again, Phil.
There is an LVH Fishing Club Road Trip coming up on Thursday, February 26th in which we will head for Tillamook and tour the Cheese Factory, the logging museum and the sporting goods store. It will be a fun trip.If you aren’t able to join in the fun, watch the LVH Fishing Club website or check out the wall at the Clubhouse for details and photos. These are always fun trips.
It seems there are always things going on with our active Club.Watch for e-mail “blasts” with updates and info, and check out the website and the wall in the Clubhouse for items of interest, important dates and photos of our “adventures”.We have gotten off to a great start so far this year and it only promises to get better!See you all around . . .

FREE ADVERTISING???
If your club, church or organization is sponsoring an event and would like a little free advertising, why not put something about it in our newsletter. We are all looking for things of interest to do in our community. Just drop a note in the editor’s box in the clubhouse and I will try to get it in the next newsletter.
Looking for Things to do in March???
On March 9th local geophysistKay Wyat from Little Whale Cove will give a presentation at the clubhouse about earthquakes in our area. She will be bringingseismographs and other aides. She will tell us the science involved with today’s earthquake predictions for the
I have known Kay for awhile and can assure you that we are in for an interesting and factual presentation. So come on down.. Drink coffee and eat popcorn..
Soon the CERT team will be going to homes that sign up for a session in what to do to make sure your water heater water is saved after an earthquake. They will come and show you exactly what to do... The 50 gallons or so of water in there could insure survival for many days. How do you get it out? How do you keep it from siphoning back into the main line under the street? They will show you how. How to keep the heating elements from burning out when power returns... They will give you the hands on that you need to know.
The power coming to your home could burn down your home when it comes back on after a prolonged outage from earthquake. Most of you think you know how to turn off the power to your home and turn it on... And you would be wrong! That little piece of information could be the difference between having your house burn to the ground after you have already lived through one disaster. (it has to do with the meter outside of most homes). CERT team members will walk you through the process.
The team feels that after a large quake you will be safer in your vehicle parked on the street than in your home. You will weather aftershocks there in relative safety but if the power is off how do you open your garage door? CERT Team members will come to those that are signed up and show you how to do it....

New TV
Gloria Mazzeo donated a TV to the clubhouse. It's a beauty. Very Large and clear. It has been hooked up and the VCR and TV channels work like a champ. However, the DVD does not work at this time. I think we need a tv, audio cable or an Stv cable .. We are working on it. Thank you Gloria for your generosity... I'm sure there will be many good times and fun ahead for the park.
This TV was extremely heavy and so was the old one. Both were moved by the 5 men in the park who we count on to help with so many things and most of you never know just who they are. You see the new item in place and start using it without thinking much about who the people were behind the scenes. They never ask for kudos from the rest of us and would probably be embarrassed to receive them but, it is fitting that you all know who they are and thank them the next time you see them in passing.... By then they will have done another couple of projects that you may never hear about I'm sure. Our community is blessed to have Wayne Hill, Wayde Dudley, Bill Furgason, Frank Stout and Jim Rose. They are our community treasure.... Praise them a lot.
Bobby Dean is already thinking about the Sports night at the clubhouse... Guys gather your beer and we will be making hot dogs and chips.
Jacky Thomas is thinking Chick Flick night..... in full surround sound...
I would like to see Tom Cruise in Top Gun fly off the carrier... a guy movie.
John Spangler is excited about the many videos the Fishing Club has that they can now watch at meetings.
Phun! Phun! Coming to a clubhouse near you soon.
Project needed to make this even better. Industrial strength casters to move this big boy around. Anybody up for that?

Meeting was called to order by President Charlotte Paulsen at 4 p.m. There were 12 residents in attendance. Because the December meeting was cancelled, there were no minutes.
Our treasurer, Bob Dean, read the treasury report. Following his report there was a discussion on how to save money on our newsletter. The cost of everything continues to rise and the printing costs of our news letter has also risen. It was discussed that we might ask for donations whenever the newsletter is printed or a charge could be made for it.We are looking into perhaps putting a box up on the wall for donations. No decision was made and the matter was tabled.
On the bulletin board we have posted the THANK YOU CARD we received from Our Sisters Place. They are the organization that selected the familywe helped at Christmas. Board members wish to thank each and every one who gave gifts for the family. You made their Christmas magical.
Ron Thomas gave a report on the current CERT activities. CERT members will be getting their recertification for AED and CPR in February and in March we willhave a guest speaker for all interested LVH residents on a program entitled “Oregon Shakes”.Everyone needs to know what to expect in an earthquake. .

THE LINE
I guess January is always the month to ponder the past, good and bad. As we get older we become more aware of how lucky we are and to appreciate both and that they make our lives what they are, not perfect, but darn good.
Now it’s time to look to the future. We have already had 2 meetings in the month of January and spent time enjoying the camaraderie that comes with all of us getting together. We have several new members and, to my joy, many are ladies. Now we are ready to get down to the business of 2009. The LVH Fishing Club has their usual on-going projects and some fun outings planned for the New Year. We hope you all have enjoyed this past year but we really do want to make this YOUR CLUB and would really appreciate any ideas you might have regarding what you would like to see, hear or do with your Longview Hills Fishing Club.
So, with that in mind, it’s time to buy your 2009 Fishing Licenses, get your fishing gear organized, mark the two days each month of the LVH Fishing Club meetings, and get ready to have some fun!!

“LVH BOOK CLUB”
Are you interested in a book club at LVH??
If so, come to our first meeting on Monday, February 9 at 7:00PM. This is a no host meeting to see how much interest there is in the community. We will discuss what type of books we want to read, how often we want to meet and other matters like that. Bring a suggestion of the book you would like to read first and we will take a vote. Hopefully we can decide on a book to start with and set up the second meeting. If you have belonged to a book club before, we can really use your input on how to make it work.
Reverse 911????
Many in our community that have landline telephones, not cell phones, received a call from LinCom last Thursday asking that you be on the look out for an elderly lady who had wandered away from her home and she had Alzheimer’s disease.
A lot of people thought that they were supposed to do something.. Not knowing what to do, they called and emailed me asking that I do something... Put a notice on the website or something...
Last year while in theCitizen
That is what happened. With one click of a button.. LinCom was able to put thousands in the know about a serious problem. They multiplied the eyes and ears looking by a gazillion. They have brought us all into the loop with this new system.. Government at its best.
What is LinCom?
By the way... The CERT team at

Sorry Charley!!
We really mean Thanks, Charley!
Charles Currey decided to move on to bigger and better things recently. Your contributions to the newsletter will be missed, but we understand your motivation. Good luck in your new endeavors, Charley. The Social Club will try to continue to keep everyone up on the news from the hill. If you have news please put info, questions, complaints, compliments(HaHa), questions for management, etc in the Editors box on the bulletin board in the clubhouse. We want this to be a community newsletter.
Have you seen the Wolf tree? He looks over the whole park and protects us from harm. But beware, don’t make him mad, or he will turn into a werewolf!!!
Would you like a remote gate opener??
If so, you may contact the Overhead Door Opener Co. in Eugene. The phone number is 541 686-8144 and the contact person was Curtis when we purchased the others a few years ago. Hopefully they will be able to send you one or if a group are interested, it may lessen the cost.
Librarian Wanted
If someone out there would be interested in being the librarian for the clubhouse please contact Charlotte Paulsen. In the meantime, if you return or donate a new book to the library, you need to file it on the shelves, hopefully in the right spot. There won’t be any boxes to put the returned books in until we find a new librarian. Please do your part and put the books you use away!!

Meet some of your new neighbors!!
LeeAnn Blumentstein is the daughter of longtime residents, Lee and Ruth Watkins. Many of you may not know that Lee was the first Park and Genereal Sales Manager back in 1989 when LeeAnn’s parents were the fourth residents to move in. Ruth and her cousin, Gladys Weaver, cleaned all of the new houses after they were finished. There is a plaque on the wall in the clubhouse that is named after LeeAnn’s folks and is called “Watkins Hall”. Check it out!
LeeAnn has moved into the park to live with her folks and help take care of them as they become older. She lost her husband , her job and both of her beloved dogs within the last four years, so LeeAnn has opened her own pet and house sitting business and is a member of Pet Sitters International. She has been a lifelong animal owner and lover and always preferred animal sitting to babysitting when she was growing up. She has always wanted to make a living working with animal and believes everything happens for a reason and now she is fulfilling her dream - being near her parents, living at the beach and opening her business. Life is wonderful!
If you would like to discuss pet sitting or house sitting with LeeAnn, give her a call at 541 574-4484. She will discuss her fees and come to meet you. There are flyers in the clubhouse.
“ I am so thrilled to be here and am meeting many new friends. The best way to describe my personality and work ethic is just to say “I am my Father’s daughter”.
Karen Wimer is another new resident and is the daughter of Lee Anne McCready. She recently moved here from Concord, California to be with her mother. Karen is starting up a Housecleaning business in the area, so if you are in need of help with the housecleaning give her a call at 541 265-9592 or 925 787-8940(cell #). She will come meet you and give you an estimate. Karen says she is not the fastest cleaner, but she is very thorough. Her mother heartily agreed!
Let’s all welcome these two to our community and support them in their business adventures, as well as all of our advertisers.
Who’s that running around on the Gator??
Meet Frank Landry, he is a cousin of the former coach of the Dallas Cowboys, Tom Landry. He came to the area 29 years ago from California, worked at fishing and in the pulp mill in Toledo. Frank lives in South Beach with his wife of 37 years, Naomi. He has 2 children, a son who lives in the area and a daughter who lives in Newberg and attends George Fox College. He also lives with a dog named Daar, he’s a Heinz 57 variety, but mostly Bull Mastiff (big dog) and a cat named Everest, who is a Siamese seal point. He says he watched LVH from the beginning and is happy to be working here! Welcome Frank, and it’s nice to see you running around and taking care of our

TIDBITS!!
THE LINE
We had our breakfast meeting at Agate Beach Golf Course on September 4th. A sure sign that summer is over was evident with the increased number of members we had. It was nice to see a “full house”. At our regular meeting on September 18th we were treated to a presentation by John Sanchez on the “Life Cycle of Salmon.” John is a member of CCFF and has professionally studied the elusive salmon for several years and gave a surprisingly interesting and, not so surprising, informative program. We enjoyed his talk so much we made him a member of our Club. We also welcomed a new member in Jack Prince. Jack is also a member of CCFF. Both of these gentlemen will be welcome additions to our meetings.
It seems we have had to do this all too often as of late, but we must make note of the passing of one of our members, Dick Garvey. The meeting will be a little quieter and a little empty without Dick. Our best wishes and love go to Bev and her family and we want her to know how much Papa Pickle will be missed.
I was thinking this morning that it is fall already, summer is gone (we didn’t seem to have much of one this year), so there will be no more fishing, hiking, camping, etc. Then I remembered John is spending time fishing on the Metolius River in Eastern Oregon. and Wayde is fishing today out of Tillamook with Brian and Frank. We live in Oregon so, of course, there is still fishing, hiking, camping and sooooo much more! Get out and enjoy it if you can. If you can’t, come and spend an hour with us for breakfast at the Agate Beach Golf Course on October 2nd at 9:00 a.m. and listen about everyone’s fish stories and adventures. It’s almost just as good. First Lady aka Barb Dudley
???ASK LARRY???
What is up with the “dumping area”?
There are no dumping areas in Longview Hills.some months I'vebeen trying to convey to persons using the area along NE 57th as a place to dispose of organic cuttings, concern over their letting cuttings build up instead of keepingthe area leveled. Also some peopleputting plastic containers, bags and other assorted items (gutters, downspouts, old yard ornaments, etc.) there alongthe yard trimmings. After several months of asking users to keep the area from becoming unsightly and continued removal of the "other stuff" by park management, resident living in the area complainedthe mess.the area was immediately posted and flagged off with warnings to any who may choose tothe area. Park managementit's effort,to clean up the area.
Is there ever going to be something done about the state of the carpet in the clubhouse?
If you are asking about new carpet that does not seem likely.
If you mean will it be cleaned at sometime in the future that will be yes.
Possibly one of the most frustrating things about the community centerthe total lack of respect for,who use.
The carpet can be professionally steam cleaned on a Sunday and by Tuesday of the same weeklook as if it't been cleaned for years.
Special compliments to Frank Stout and some other residents who joined him tosteam cleanerthe central area of the community center some time back, they did ajob and it was greatly appreciated.only took aday or so however andplace lookedthan before these valiant men's.
If anyone has a suggestion on how to get residents to take pride in their community centerwould be appreciated.the community centera major re-siding this summer and will doubtless have other issues to be dealt with in the future. Last year several doors were replaced and the deck was worked on. Strangely the newdoors seldom get closedwell as the window in the craftand/or computer roomduring the stormy season. Groups using the dishwashers either fail to unload the dishes or completely ignore loading them and/or turning them on once they have been loaded into the washer. People getting popcorn refuse to pick up what they have dropped on the floor from the kitchen to thedoor etc, etc, etc.
Benjamin Franklin once said, "Any fool can condemn, complain and criticize and most fools do".
And
Albert Einstein who said, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result".
Recently the park lost a few longtime residents, Frida Holt and Dick Garvey passed away in September. Our condolences to their spouses and families.
The Breakfields returned from summer in Alaska, I suppose the snowbirds and the geese will be heading South soon.
Don Newman reports that “This past month I have seen the most items ever, dropped in the Food Share and Salvation Army boxes. One Box weighed in excess of 100 pounds. THANK YOU ALL!!!”
