DON’T TELL ANYONE!
I am gratified to see so much interest in the newsletter. We have now expanded to 10 pages. There are many things I would like to include, but space is not available for all of them.
The Social Club is becoming more active and I had to choose some high points. The complete minutes will be posted on the bulletin board and they appeared on the web site. If at all possible, you should attend the meetings, the third Monday of the month at 4:00 PM.
Now the reason for this article. I receive many e-mails from people with warnings about scams and identity theft. Betty Owens has been one of my primary sources for this. Some have been on the web site as well:
www.longviewhillshere.blogspot.com
In the interest of space, I would like to give a short version of some of the most important points.
Both VISA and Master Card have had a problem with callers stating that they are from the Security and Fraud Department of the particular credit card company. The caller gives their name and a badge number. You even get a control number to mention, if you call the 800 number on the back of your card.
The caller tells you that your account has been flagged because of a transaction of $497, just below the limit when most cards are flagged, and that they have been watching a fraud ring with purchases like that.
Then comes the thing that credit companies never do, the caller asks you to read 3 specific numbers from the back of your credit card, which gives them access to your account. The people reporting this, did call VISA and found that, after the call they received, a charge was made to their account in the amount of $497.
We received a call from one of our credit card companies and refused to give information. We told them, since we didn’t initiate the call, we did not know that they were who they said they were. We called the company and found that it was a telemarketer trying to sell us more credit card products.
Another warning is to protect your cards, pin numbers, as you enter them, or other personal information. Cell phone cameras can capture more than you want them to.
Good Advise: Attend our Fraud, Scams, and Identity Theft Seminar on
Friday, February 6th at 1:30 PM.

ST. JUDE’S CARDS
A big THANK YOU to all of you who donated your cards for St. Jude’s Ranch for Children.
The response this year was wonderful. Over 2000 cards were collected and taken to Thompson’s Sanitary where they will be mailed to St. Jude’s Ranch in Nevada.
Once again, THANK YOU.

SOCIAL CLUB
Donna Talarski discussed the PCH meeting held at the clubhouse recently and said she was unaware that there would be only one topic of helpful information discussed and the other two topics were basically a solicitation by PCH for money. She said another meeting by PCH is due in April, and she would check first to make sure it was not a solicitation and would be helpful, informative topics for the majority of residents, before booking.
Donna reported on the progress of a U. S. flag for the clubhouse. Bill Furgason will donate the labor and work with Larry Henson to determine the placement of the flag, etc. The flag itself is being donated. A motion was offered, seconded, and passed, to proceed with the purchase of equipment needed and installation of the flag.
Elaine Adkins, Editor of the LVH newsletter, asked if residents who are not currently living in the park, and want the newsletter mailed to them each month, are responsible for paying their own postage, or if the Social Club was responsible. It was determined, after discussion by those present, that the person requesting the newsletter should be responsible for providing a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the editor for each newsletter they wish mailed to them.

CHANGES IN
"WELCOME COMMITTEE"
After a year of service, the current members of the LVH Welcoming Committee, Jim & Bonnie Rose and Bill & Kathy Furgason, are stepping down. Jack & Ginny Scherer have graciously offered to step in and take over the duties of this committee.
It has been a pleasure to serve in this capacity and the four of us have thoroughly enjoyed welcoming new residents to our park. We've had the pleasure of meeting many nice and interesting new people. If you know of any new neighbors moving into your area, please contact Jack & Ginny at 265-5529 and pass the information on to them.
Although she moved into the park back in November, we were able to give Buzzy Byerrum an official welcome in January. Buzzy lives at 5709 NE Windmill. This delightful lady hails from California and has already become active in many of the activities offered here at LVH. lf you haven't already met her, please be sure to say "Hi" and give her a hearty welcome!
Speaking of getting active, Buzzy has graciously agreed to help with the Welcoming Committee along with Bob Abbott, who has been with us about a year now. We welcome both of these new members, along with Jack and Ginny to the committee.
Home Repair Scams
Something else
to avoid this spring!!
The Oregon Construction Contractors Board (CCB) is advising homeowners to protect themselves this spring by hiring only CCB licensed contractors and being skeptical of home repair businesses that solicit door-to-door or by telephone. The most common scams? Roof repairs, furnace and duct cleaning, tree removal, gutter cleaning, manufactured home cleaning/repairs and chimney sweeping/cleaning.
Pat Carroll, the public education assistant at the CCB, will be offering a workshop to residents of Longview Hills on Wednesday, March 17th, at 2:00 PM. She will be speaking on the importance of hiring only a licensed contractor. Carroll will give sound advice on now to protect yourself by working with a licensed contractor, what to include in a contract, how to recognize construction con artists, and what you can do if you suspect illegal activity is taking place.
FRAUD, SCAMS AND THEFT
A speaker from the Oregon Justice Department will be at LVH on Friday, February 6, 2004 to address the growing concern of Identity Theft, how to prevent it, and what to do if you become a victim. She will also address "How to Avoid Scams and Frauds." Mark your calendars for this important presentation.

CORRECTION
Holiday Cheer, January, 2004
Don Newman made a mistake. Sorry, but don't tell Joy. The wonderful Christmas lights were mistakenly listed at a wrong address. They should have been listed at Leonard and Rusty Johnson's home, Lot 40, at 618 NE 59th Street. Secret: He’s a Great Food Service man too.
WHAT'S ON THE MENU?
Come join us at the Newport Senior Activity Center for lunch. We serve meals Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. We start playing bingo at 11:00 and, at 11:45, we are entertained with music by Don Schmit.
We serve hot meals or a deli lunch. You get milk, coffee, dessert, and the entree for a small donation of $3.00. We even have fresh home-made bread, rolls, muffins, cookies, cakes, cobbler, and crisps.
Come join us; meet old and new friends. To make your reservations, call Carol Boysun at 574-0669. HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL SOON!
NEW DECORATING
COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN
Is that you? We have decorations. We just don’t have anyone with your flair for using them to the best advantage. If you like to decorate, we need to talk with you. Please call Donna Talarski at 265-5530 to volunteer. Thanks from all of us who will enjoy a beautiful clubhouse.
HELPFUL HINTS
Last time I wrote, I discussed our furnaces and the types of filters - now here is the rest of the story! When you change your filter or service them regularly, you're not only providing your household cleaner, dust-free air, but providing cleaner air for the fan to cool itself & its bearings. I might add here that some furnaces have a two-position rocker switch mounted inside next to the front of the fan. (You have to take the front panel off to see it.) In one position, the fan will run continuously; and in the other position, it will let it start and stop as needed during the heating cycle. The "run" position is useful for constant air circulation in the summertime, or if you have an electronic air-filter system installed on the furnace. I should also mention that some of the furnaces have a rotary 3 position switch (without a knob) mounted on the fan housing. This is a speed control switch, but is useless unless you have a heat pump attachment for your furnace. The necessary wiring to utilize this switch comes with the heat pump package. For the most part, these furnaces have been and are good dependable heating units and have given us very little trouble. Their design is the essence of simplicity and, with minimal care, they should provide years of dependable service.
If you are having a problem trying to maintain a comfortable temperature in your home, part of the problem could be in the wall thermostat. Unless you bought one of the "programmable" types, the one that came with your house is a pretty simple and inexpensive one. In fact, the numbers on it rarely actually match the true temperature to which it is set. So they are used more for a reference than actual room temperature. But all these have one internal feature called an "anticipator".
This device helps to match the thermostat, electronically, to your particular furnace. It determines how often the furnace starts and stops, and when properly adjusted, should keep your room temperature within 2 degrees of the setting on the thermostat. It has an adjustment scale of 1 - 10, and is usually set at 5 when installed at the factory. The furnace people tell me that the furnace should cycle 4 to 6 times per hour under normal heating circumstances. So, if you set the anticipator to a higher number, it will give FEWER cycles per hour with longer "on" times. Setting it to a lower number will produce MORE cycles per hour with shorter "on" times. You should only move the anticipator indicator a small amount each time and allow 24 hours for it to stabilize before adjusting it further, while taking note of the furnace's performance during that period.

BIRTHDAY PARTY
Sunday, the 18th of January, we had a get-together to help celebrate January birthdays. About 20 people showed up to enjoy cake and ice cream, plus a lot visiting. Those having birthdays in January who were able to attend were: Ruth Watkins, Marilyn Kalar, Betty Hanus, and Frida Burke.
We would like to thank those who put this party together. It's always fun to have these get-togethers at the wonderful club house we have here on the hill. Pictures were taken and you can see them by clicking on OUR PICTURES on the Longview Hills web site:
www.longviewhillshere.blogspot.com
We are planning to have a Birthday Party each month of the year. It will be scheduled for the third Sunday of the month at 2:00 PM. The next party will be February 15th.
NOTES
Betty Owens obtained information from Senior Services on many opportunities available to seniors of all income levels. Copies of this information are available at the clubhouse.
A Financial Fraud Resource List is available on the bulletin board at the LVH Clubhouse. This information was received from the District Attorney for Lincoln County, Bernice Barnett.

SUNSHINE
Cards were sent to Charlene Shimek for her dad's passing and also to Edna Wilson for the death of her husband, Jim.
Please contact Jean Hart at 574-6846 if you know of anyone who needs a card. We want them to know that their neighbors are thinking of them.
LADIES COFFEE
Don’t forget the Ladies Coffee on Tuesday, February 24th, at 10 AM. This is a wonderful opportunity to get acquainted with other ladies in the community.
GOING MY WAY?
If you are planning a day trip to Beaverton, Ingrid Muhlstein would like to ride along. Her number is 265-8750. This might be a way to meet a new friend.
Others who may be interested in making this type of a connection are free to advertise in the newsletter. Put requests in the Editor’s Box (to the right of our individual boxes) no later than the 25th of the month to make the next newsletter.
ADDITIONAL FROM SOCIAL CLUB
A motion was made that two new microwaves be purchased for the clubhouse as the current ones do not meet the needs of our kitchen when we have large functions. They were priced at under $100. Jackie Memoli offered to pay for one of the microwaves (up to $100). The motion was seconded and passed, that the Social Club would purchase a second microwave for the kitchen, not to exceed $100.
Do You Like Chocolate?
Are you a person who really enjoys a nice plate of healthy appetizers, a glass of good wine, and then, all the most delicious, sensual chocolate desserts that one person can have in one short afternoon? Well then, do I have the place for you! It’s the Lincoln Council On Aging fund raiser for RSVP, Chocolate Classics, "An Affair to Remember".
The Chocolate Classics will be held at Salishan in Glen Eden Beach, February 15th, 2004, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM
Not only do you get to eat some of the best chocolate along the coast, but also, you will have the chance to bid on some very special items donated for the silent auction. Many stores and companies, throughout Lincoln County, have donated some very beautiful one-of-a-kind-items for this event.
I hope you can make it. It’s a great chance to get out and support an organization that helps people of our generation. Tickets will be sold at the door for $20.00 per person.
See you there!

HE RULES OF CHOCOLATE
If you've got melted chocolate all over your hands, you're eating it too slowly.
Chocolate covered raisins, cherries, orange slices & strawberries all count as fruit, so eat as many as you want.
The problem: How to get two pounds of chocolate home from the store in the hot car. The solution: Eat it in the parking lot.
Diet tip: Eat a chocolate bar before each meal. It'll take the edge off your appetite and you'll eat less.
A nice box of chocolates can provide your total daily intake of calories in one place. Isn't that handy?
If you can't eat all your chocolate, it will keep in the freezer, but if you can't eat all your chocolate, what's wrong with you?
Chocolate has many preservatives.
Preservatives make you look younger.
LVH SCRAPBOOKS
After talking to our Chairman, Donna Talarski at the Social Club meeting, I was surprised to learn she was not aware we have a scrapbook (actually 2 of them) which I have been keeping for several years. Maybe you too are unaware of their existence. At your leisure, look them over. I think you will find them quite interesting. They are kept in the library section of the clubhouse on the top shelf of the VCR tape section. Please do not remove them from the clubhouse - that is a great way to lose them.
