A VIEW FROM THE HILL
JUNE 2005

EDITOR’S NOTE: While Jim and Marilyn McCrea are exploring the wonders of our 50th state, I am sitting here at the keyboard typing our Newsletter.

SOCIAL CLUB MINUTES: There were 32 residents at the meeting, up from last month’s attendance. The minutes from last month were read and approved. Jacky Thomas reported that 55 people enjoyed the Mother’s Day Catered Event. Jacky outdid herself with the decorations, silver tea sets with Rhododendrons from the neighbor-hood, as the centerpieces. New activities include: possible performance by The Sweet Adeline’s and a Poker Tournament, (chaired by Dick Billingham) to help offset the cost of re-felting the Pool Table. As reported last month, we need someone to run for the position of Co-Chair, Dick Billingham and Dick Garvey volunteered to chair the Nominating Committee, so if you are interested, please contact them. Ron Thomas reported on the Emergency Light System
(full report from Fire Chief to follow).
The Welcoming Committee is planning a Welcoming Dinner in honor of the many new residents. Everyone is invited to come and get acquainted. The dinner is scheduled to follow the July Social Club meeting and is free. A Pasta Dinner is planned. Please come and enjoy good food, old friends and make some new friends.

ACCOUNTABILITY: The Treasurery is still in good shape with approximately $6900 in the account.

FATHER’S DAY AT IZZYS is planned for Sunday, June 19th at 4:00 P.M! The cost
is $7.49 each (including drinks) and each Dad will receive a coupon for a free dinner at a future date. The Social Club will pick up the cost of the gratuity. We still need gifts for our guys. If you can obtain a gift certificate from your favorite restaurant, garage, fishing supply, hardware store, etc. please pass them on to Ben Davi or Jacky
Thomas.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: I have only nine birthdays to report for this month. If your name was missed, please drop a note in the Editor’s box and we will appropriately celebrate with you next month.

01 Bob Spangler
10 Jim Dodds
15 Dee Shimek
18 Doris Pyles
19 Elaine Adkins & Norma Williams
20 Helen Williams 27 Hazel Chase & Bev Garvey

As we all know, any cake or desserts consumed on one’s birthday contain empty calories (zero weight gain). So, don’t be afraid to go back for seconds. Happy Birthday, and many more.

THE PENNY RAFFLE was held at the Mother’s Day Dinner and the winners are:
1st place $100 – Betty Scott

A BINGO extravanga was held with the Social Club banking $100 for the last game. There were 20 residents attending and each game was the total paid. The last game was won by Dick Billingham. Congratulations Dick, when’s dinner?

CLEDA HAMPTON announced that she will not be the Librarian anymore. She said that Marion Rogers will be taking over her duties, but we will need someone to volunteer to be in charge of the two large bulletin boards.

A CHILI COOKOFF/POTLUCK is scheduled for July 23rd. We need some volunteers to Chair this event, as well as judges. It was suggested that there be a $5 entry fee if your chili is to be judged and the winners would share the pot.

2rd place $50 – Dick Garvey
3nd place $25 – Buddy Means
Thanks to all who purchased tickets. Maybe next time more will participate and the pots will be larger. Who can’t use a little extra CASH now and then?

CASINO NIGHT is scheduled for June
We desperately need Dealers and Workers.
This is a night of FUN and we need to let the dealers and other workers have a break to enjoy the festivities. Even if you don’t know how to deal, we can and will teach you. Call Ben Davi and volunteer…soon. CALENDERS for the next two month’s activities are now in the Newsletter. This will give you a heads-up for events scheduled in the first part of the coming month so you can plan accordingly.

A MAN is recovering from minor surgery when his nurse came into check on him. “How are you feeling?” she asks. “I’m okay,” he says, “but I didn’t like the four letter word the doctor used during surgery.” “What did he say?” asked the nurse. “Oops.”

Dear Folks,
It has been nearly two years since you began your neighborhood project to establish a unique system of emergency address identification. I want to thank you and particularly Ron Thomas for all the effort you put into this project
Some of you may have wondered at times whether this project was worthwhile. Let me assure you that your system is worthwhile and has made our job in emergency services much easier. From personal experience, as an emergency responder, I find it very reassuring to know that there is a fair chance that a beacon of blinking light will help guide us to the correct address.
Your system has also aided our local ambulance service. Sometimes when the call load is heavy there is a need to bring in an ambulance from an outside community such as Lincoln City. These employees may not be completely familiar with our addresses and they have told me how helpful your lighting system has been for them.
As I stated before there is fair chance of your system helping us. You could improve those chances by increasing participation in the program. We at the Newport Volunteer Fire Department would hope that all residences would want to take advantage of this program. Batting 500 is pretty good in baseball but we are not talking baseball here, we are talking about someone's life and in our business time is of essence.
Best regards,
Toby Cole Assistant Chief Newport, Fire Department

The preceeding column was from Toby Cole, Assistant Chief, addressing the emergency address system we have here in Longview Hills. I can only add that we have some residents that have not put their address on the globe outside their home. This is very important and could save lives, including your own. The cost is a mere $5, which covers the cost of material. If you are interested, please call Ron Thomas and he or Jim Rose will be happy to add you to their list.

THE LONGVIEW HILLS DIRECTORY will be published sometime in June-July. If your name is not in the directory, or if there is an error in spelling, or if your phone number is not there, or if the address is wrong, etc. please contact Ben or Donna Davi. We will try our hardest to get this correct.

OUR NEW WELCOMING COMMITTEE members are Buzzy Byerrum (265-5004), Bev & Dick Garvey (574-7372), Nancy Lee Moore (265-7228), Marilyn Kalar (574-9109) and Dick Billingham (265-4676). These folks have volunteered to serve for the remainder of 2005. These members welcome new residents to the Park with a small gift and give them information about all the activities and advantages of living in Newport and at Longview Hills. If you know of a new neighbor, or if you yourself have moved in since the first of this year, please call one of these members. They are anxiously waiting to meet and greet you and welcome you to our community. WE'RE GLAD YOU'RE HERE!

ATTENTION CRIBBAGE LOVERS! A new cribbage club has been formed and you're invited to join in the fun! Members will meet from 7-9 pm at the Clubhouse twice each month, on the 2nd and 4th Mondays.
Here's the schedule for the rest of 2005.
June 13th & 27th July 11th & 25th Aug. 8th & 22nd Sept. 12th & 26th Oct. 10th & 24th Nov. 14th & 28th Dec. 12th & 26th

A first and second prize will be awarded each time, from the 25 cent per person entry fee. If you would like to, you may
bring a snack to share. If you are interested in playing, please sign your name on the Cribbage Club sheet on the bulletin board, and show up for our first June meeting on Mon., June~13th. Questions? Call Carol Grover at 574-9855

WHO IS SHE?
She was born in Texas, grew up in Georgia and moved to California when she was a senior in high school. This blonde, soft-spoken gal is anything but dull! After 26 years as an employment manager in human resources with Hewlett-Packard, she took an early retirement in July 2002 and toured Europe. She is a dichotomy. She likes playing classical music on her piano for her own enjoyment... and likes to gamble. She enjoys the theater immensely. She reads almost every type of fiction, and loves walking on the beach. Because she likes to continually learn new things, since retiring, she's learned to play the violin and is thinking about guitar lessons next Oh, and did I mention ... she has a law degree!
Yes ladies and gentlemen, while working full time and raising her family, she decided it might be fun to learn about the law. She attended Lincoln Law School in Sacramento, California, nights and week-ends, and received her degree. She is also a certified Mediator.
Her oldest son Kevin and his family live in Burnt Woods, her son Ryan and his family are located in Seattle, and she's biding her time until her son Damon returns from duty in Iraq. While he's off serving his country, his mother is caring for his little yellow pick-up, as well as his 2 year old Lab mix, Dewey. Dewey has lots of company, with this lady's two other pals, Cowboy, a Lab/Great Dane mix who is 13 years old, and Woodstock, her 11 year old Dalmatian. She's afraid some of her neighbors might be afraid, hearing these 3 large pups barking, but, she assures me, they're all as harmless as marshmallows! If you'd like to meet her, or any of her doggie buddies, just give her a call! Her number is 574-1612.
'Asked what she'd still like to accomplish, she smiles and tells me she'd like to go to the Olympics in China in 2008. One of her daughters-in-law is Chinese. She would also like to visit Australia.
Figured it out yet? This knowledgeable, interesting, fun woman's name is Sue Hayes and she moved to Longview Hills in December of 2004. She resides at 5708 NE Windmill. Her favorite things about living here are her view of the ocean, the quietness, the fact that there's little traffic, the security and especially the people. So say hi to Sue whenever you see her,

DON NEWMAN reports the residents of Longview Hills are very generous in supporting Lincoln County Food Share. Along with their support, there were many white post office boxes filled on May 13-14. Please no open containers of any kind. Thank you.
