Do we NEED a Social Club???

This subject comes up frequently. The simple answer is “NO”; we don’t NEED a Social Club. Maybe we don’t NEED the Social Club, but we should consider some of the benefits of having the Social Club.

If you are reading this newsletter, it is courtesy of the Social Club – no charge!

If you receive and use the directory for an address or phone number, it is courtesy of the Social Club – no charge!

If you have ever sat on and enjoyed one of the new chairs in the clubhouse, they were purchased by the Social Club.

If you have ever eaten popcorn in the clubhouse, it is furnished by the Social Club.

If you have ever participated in the Second Time Around Sale – the advertising and signage is furnished by the Social Club.

If you have ever used the new water filter in the kitchen, remember the Social Club purchased the filter system.

If you have ever played pool in the clubhouse, remember the Social Club helped pay for the repairs to the tables.

If you have ever watched the television in the clubhouse or played dominoes, remember he Social Club purchased those items.

If you have ever read a book, watched a movie or listened to a Book on Tape, remember the Social Club maintains the library and provided the shelving to hold all of these.

If you have a remote control for the gate to the park, remember the Social Club organized the sale of them.

If you appreciate the numbers on the lampposts in the park, remember the Social Club organized that program.

If you have ever used your cubbyhole in the clubhouse to pass on something to another resident, remember the Social Club provided the cubbies.

If you have ever enjoyed a breakfast, potluck, ice cream social or other meal at the clubhouse, it was probably organized by the Social Club. Granted some have not been as good as others, but who can say every meal they have eaten elsewhere has been wonderful.

There are many other ways the Social Club has benefited Longview Hills over the years.

Every resident of the park is automatically a member of the Social Club. There is no membership fee, but if you enjoy some of the things provided by the Social Club, maybe you should step up and take a part in how the Social Club runs. Just coming to a meeting and helping with decisions is a way to show that you care. Sitting around the clubhouse on the chairs provided by the Social Club and criticizing the ones who do take part doesn’t really help anything.

A concerned resident!!!

FROM THE EDITOR:

On July fourth we will celebrate the founding of our country for the two hundred and thirty second time. There will be barbeques, family gatherings and programs of every kind and fireworks. Usually tis a grand old time entirely! This year is different. This year something marvelous has happened. This has been a year when the freedom of our country has been expressed beyond the wildest dreams of our founding fathers!

I am, of course, referring to the presidential election where a woman and a black man could make a serious run at becoming president. Whether either one actually becomes president is not so much the point as the fact that never again will it be inconceivable that such a thing could happen.

The talking heads are predicting an unprecedented number of people will turn out to vote, each for his/her own reason and that is the beauty of our form of government. We each have the right to be wrong!

Let us all rejoice in the intelligent discourse to which we will be exposed for the next 125 days and when the time comes VOTE EARLY AND OFTEN.

As for me, I hope to see the day we elect a YOUNG, BLACK WOMAN!

NO GOOD DEED SHALL GO UNPUNISHED

Providing shelter to the homeless is not something that is high on most of our agendas . In fact the usual remark is to the effect that if they are homeless it is their own fault. That translates to, If they were just more like me they wouldn’t need help. W hen I heard that Ellis and Kathy Twitchell were planning on providing shelter for not just one but six homeless couples I immediately became interested. It is true, and what is more amazing they plan to include any progeny that may ensue. I know that the Twitchells are a caring couple and that Ellis, at least, had grown up in a large family but the logistics of such an endeavor seemed mind boggling. “Nothing to it,” said Ellis triumphantly, “We will put some semi permanent structures on our lot and there will be plenty of room”.

Well folks,I know that some mean-spirited soul may object to this arraignment but what is a little crowding, a little noise when one is doing the Lord’s work? I, for one wish them well and that they are not disappointed in their endeavor to fill a need. Bless them for trying.

ED. Note

If you go by their lot you will notice that the structures don’t look that bad and if the immediate neighbors don’t object then why should others? I wonder if the Twitchells have considered that the homeless might not want to live with the likes of us?

It is with great sadness all of us in the LVH Fishing Club note the passing of our dear friend, Rod “Coach” McCready. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Lee Anne and her family. Isn’t it wonderful and wouldn’t all of us like to be remembered the way we will remember Coach – always with his beautiful smile and wonderful laugh. He will be missed and we are glad for our memories of him.

We had our monthly breakfast meeting at the Agate Beach Golf Course, discussed past and future projects and told the always present fish stories. We look forward to our annual tour of the Yaquina Bay Coast Guard Station on June 19th.

Several members of our Club were on hand June 7th to help with the Big Creek Kid’s Fishing Day sponsored by NW Steelheaders. It was a cool day but, thankfully, we didn’t have much rain and the kids all had a great time (which is the most important thing and the main reason we are involved with the project).

Please put 9:00 a.m. on the first (Breakfast at the Agate Beach Golf Course) and third (LVH Clubhouse) Thursday of each month on your calendar and plan on joining us for a meeting. We’d love to have any and all of you!

WE GET LETTERS

Dear Mr. Editor,

As you know, I have just had two multi-family residences erected on my property. It all came about, not because I wanted the homes built; rather, because part of my back fence became airborne in December when winds registered somewhere near hurricane force. This began the somewhat convoluted sequence of events.

Kathy wanted me to rebuild the fence but I prevailed by persistent sniveling and whining about the cost and the need to maintain it through future winter storms. Besides, I said, I preferred the unobstructed view without the fence. She finally agreed that removal would be advantageous in that it was in dire need of staining and the previous owner had guyed two posts back to stakes in the flower bed. Kathy remembered the first time she asked me to help paint the walls in the house we were moving into just after we were married. I had paint on the carpet, windows, her and the cat. She forbade me to ever touch another piece of painting apparatus. So, staining the fence was not high on her list of favorite things to do this summer.

At the Second Time Around Sale, I put a very neat sign in the garage indicating I had a free cedar fence to whomever would remove it. During the first half-hour we had several takers. The first (who took possession) wanted the cedar to build birdhouses and feeders. Kathy arranged to accept, in trade, one birdhouse. During the removal project he offered a second three-family birdhouse, to be made out of the fence, installed. Kathy jumped at the offer.

Less than a week later the builder had two multi-family birdhouses mounted on pressure treated posts erected in the backyard. Now I am seeking occupants, but am at a loss as to how to market the rentals to the bird public. I have heard horror stories about problem ornithic residents. We have an abundance of big black birds, but I have heard they are not good neighbors…besides the doorways are too small and I don’t want to do any remodeling on the new houses. Also, the friendly and happy robins (whom I would love to do business with) will be too large to enter.

The questions, therefore, are;

  1. What local birds should I seek out as occupants?
  2. What do they look like?
  3. What do they sound like…will they be too disruptive?
  4. How should I go about attracting them?
  5. Am I too late for the immigrant birds to be interested?

The builder also installed, while we were shopping at the Used Food Store in Lincoln City, a fly-by diner in the front yard. I have since serviced it with some as-cheap-as-I-could-find birdseed. After over a week the birds seem to be ignoring the delicacies.

  1. What can I do to get rid of all of that bird seed since the smallest I could find was five pounds of the stuff?
  2. How soon after I have diner patrons or renters would it be in good taste to raise the food prices or rent?

Something else I would like to know is what is that little brown bird with the reddish breast that looks like a robin but is smaller? Would they be good renters? How many different kinds of birds do we have in or around Longview Hills? I have tentatively identified a bigger bird that sometimes hangs around the pond, as some kind of goose. Do we have anybody in the park that can give me some help…We need the rent money to buy gas.

Thanks for whatever help you can give.

Ellis Twitchell

Dear Mr Twitchell

How strange that you should write to disabuse me of my confusion about your helping the homeless. Perhaps some of the residents here will breathe a little easier now that they can shift their displeasure to more immediate problems, such as neighbors who refuse to fence their yard.

To answer your questions about birds though, I think you may not be not aware that song birds are disappearing at an alarming rate from North America. You may find no takers and I am sure that you know that nothing spoils a neighborhood faster than boarded up empty houses. Perhaps you should be happy with big black birds.

The people who know about birds are called BIRDERS and I would be surprised if we didn’t have at least one or two skulking around in the bushes here. If you lean on me for bird identification you have a weak reed indeed. I too have some of those big black birds around. They do seem to love peanuts. Recently I have been plagued with a great flock of large birds mobbing my feeder. I would go out and shake a stick at them but they look a good deal like pterodactyls and I shudder to think what could happen if they became annoyed.

I do not know the answer to your question about how many species of birds are seen here. To find out we therefore announce----------

A NEW CONTEST FOR JULY

RULES

List the different species of birds sighted within the confines of LVH from July 1 through July 25th.

Description should be complete enough for a birder to identify. Ie “a little brown bird” does not quite hack it.

Your list should be in the box To The Editor by the 25th.

Lest you think we have all gone batty we really do have a nice prize for the winner.

We will need a couple of Auduboners to judge the entries.

We know that birders can be tempted to pad their Life List. The following entries will be questioned:

Ali Baba Roc

Passenger Pigeon

Ivory Bill Woodpecker

Rosy Breasted Dowager (Often reported around clubhouse).

Join the fun, you may be lucky!

Charles Currey

As you read this edition you will begin to sense what will happen when you don’t listen to the editor. Instead of interesting contributions from yourself or others you get ME, ME, ME and still more ME! Just so I do not earn the appellation CHARLEY THE NAG, I will begin the New Year with a few good intentions.

There will be no more comments about people speeding in the park, not cleaning up after their pets, love stories of any kind. I shall try to spend some moments, every day, in appreciation of all the good aspects of living in Long View Hills, not the least of which is the SOCIAL CLUB. Thanks to them we are all given the opportunity to gather together for dinners, breakfasts plus all the other activities.

I appreciate the fact that a group of residents care enough about the rest of us to spend hours in preparation for a disaster of any kind. What they do is important and serious business.

I appreciate the leadership of the LVH Fishermen’s Club, of which I am a non-contributing member, their activities are not only fun but are recognized county and state wide for their contributions.

I appreciate the fact that I am blessed with great neighbors who display all the friendly and cooperative aspects of what it means to live in this type community.

Finally, I hope to highlight what other inhabitants of LVH are doing, have done, hope to do or wish they hadn’t. In addition, I owe many thanks to those who have already suggested the names of folks who might be interviewed for inclusion in coming issues.

Christmas family!

From Ginger Dale

Just a note to let everyone who contributed gifts for the Christmas family know that we were able to give this family a wonderful Christmas. I did learn that all of the kids are not her own grandchildren; she just inherited some of them. The grandma does work, but doesn't make much and does not receive much in the way of aid for the kids. So, she was more than grateful for all of the gifts and gift cards that we gave her.

The people of Longview Hills are very generous when they see a need. There are so many ways to help around our community and our city; it is great to see such a great response from everyone.

Thanks again and here are to a wonderful New Year for all of us!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

We will be printing another new directory this month, if you know of any corrections and/or additions, please let me know so I can get everyone included or excluded, as the case may be, in our directory.

On Thursday, December 20th, the Longview Hills Fishing Club had their annual Christmas Party. This is the last meeting of the year and what better way to spend it than with friends? John Spangler reflected on some of the things we did the past year and I think we all realized we sometimes forget just how busy the LVH Fishing Club is. Not only are we involved with projects helping ODFW and SOLV, we also had some wonderful field trips and guest speakers. It was a great year.

This last meeting of the year is also marked by the presentation of the Joe Longo Award. The recipient this year was Bill Furgason. He was honored for his many contributions to the Fishing Club, the service he gave as a member of the LVH Fishing Club Board, and his wonderful, upbeat attitude. Michelle Longo, Joe Long’s daughter, was on hand to present the award to Bill, which made it extra special.

MEMBER OF THE MONTH: It only seems appropriate at the end of this long and productive year to salute each and every member of the LVH Fishing Club. We wouldn’t have a Club without you, so I will say to you all, “Well done!”

The Board is really looking forward to this next year, 2008. Please let us know if there is anything you would be interested in. Maybe you know a guest speaker you would like to hear, or a special topic for a meeting, or a field trip you would be interested in. We would love to hear your suggestions. Also, everyone who reads this column, please remember you are invited to any of our meetings or field trips.

We have no minutes of the Social Committee for this issue to keep up with the activities for January check the boards in the clubhouse.

FROM THE EDITOR:

Last month we began a series of three love stories, the first being a childhood love of a MAGIC object. This month’s story is about childhood love of an individual while next month’s story has to do with the futility of revisiting lost loves. Adults’ tend to forget how intense childhood love can be. Test yourself, sit down and write the name of every individual you have loved or had a crush on. Bet you can remember most.

December, being the Christmas season, is supposed to be all about love. Love of self, of family members, of our God, of our group and of humanity. Well the last is a tall order but by bringing it closer to home we can at least show concern for the welfare of people within our own community. With that in mind let us all be as generous as we can to the family our Social Club has undertaken to help, as well as others less fortunate. Residents of LVH have always been generous.

Your editor and all the good people who contribute to this newsletter wish all of you a joyous holiday season! HO HO HO

---------------------------------------------------------------------

When we look back over our lives most of us tend to downplay our activities and accomplishments as just a part of hum drum living when in fact nearly everyone has had some experiences that others would be interested in hearing about. For that reason we would like to run a monthly column portraying an individual, or couple, which has had [enjoyed?] a particularly interesting life. If you know of any such please give me a call, 265-9560, or drop a note in the Editor’s bin.

Jacky Thomas stated National Guard is collecting food to send troops in Iraq. They would like Christmas type canned food. A collection box will be set up in the Clubhouse.

.

Chairman Dudley reported he had been approached by someone who wished to remain anonymous who is interested in putting up a memorial bench sometime in the future. They requested that if they paid for the bench and materials that the LVH Social Club donate labor to install it. It was agreed. Larry Henson has approved this.

Wayde reported that 20 of the surplus chairs are gone. There are still 20-25 left.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:25 p.m.

VOX UP POP?

By Ron Thomas

Solve a Mystery ... Have fun

This Mystery has not been solved by anyone but it is one that is causing some problems with the LVH Neighborhood Watch Radio network...

Let me explain what is happening... VOX... VOX is the culprit here. Voice Only Transmitting=VOX. This person we are looking for has this feature selected on their radio. What's it do? Well, it causes the radio to transmit when it hears a sound. You don't have to push the transmit button at all! It hears a sound and transmits.. Not a good thing! We want to show the person how not to have this selected.

What it's been doing is transmitting at night when people are asleep and in the early morning hours before most of us are awake. That wakes up the very few volunteers that monitor the Channel for emergencies 24/7 as it causes a loud tone to come over our radios. During the day it can be an aggravation too as responders wonder if it is someone trying to get help but can't talk. The same person clicks his transmit button a few times a day causing watchers of the channel to ask if there is a problem. So? Well, now we have 24/7 listeners aggravated to the point that they turn off their radios.. The system takes a real punch when this happens.

Here is what we know about the person... They have a cough, maybe a chronic one. They have a dog. They most likely are hard of hearing as we have tried to contact them many times when their radio transmits. We have had articles about this before and nothing resulted from that so the person may not have a computer.

I'm sending this article to Charley to publish in the newsletter...

Help us sleuth this out by asking your friends that have a radio to see the readout on the front of the radio and in tiny letters the word VOX will be displayed on the screen

Wayde reported LVH Social Club received $100 for a memorial bench with the request that if they paid for the bench and materials that the LVH Social Club donate the labor to install it.

It was agreed. Larry Henson has approved this.

November for the Longview Hills Fishing Club is a time to take care of business. Items of interest and Club plans were discussed, plans were made. We have our ongoing fish trap duties at the Siletz and Schooner Creek Fish Traps as well as several other worthwhile events we help with during the year. We also have great guest speakers and fun field trips coming up. We always learn something new at our meetings and on our field trips and have fun along the way. Who could ask for anything more?

The slate of Officers for 2008 was presented and voted on at the November 15th meeting. Officers are as follows:

· John Spangler (aka The Hook) President

· Wayne Hill (aka Big Fish) Vice President

· Brian Hudson (aka General) Operations Officer

· Frank Stout (aka Ducks) Administrative Officer

· Barbara Dudley (aka First Lady) Public Affairs Officer

· Wayde Dudley (aka Surveyor) Special Projects Officer

· Dave Dinsmoor (aka Creek Meister) Master at Arms

MEMBER OF THE MONTH: It seems like every time we have a function or are helping the kids learn about fishing, I see Bud Roark there giving demonstrations on tying flies. What a great way for young people (and us older ones, too) to learn, seeing someone actually doing the work and taking pride in what he does. I can’t think of a better way to teach than by example. His quiet presence is valued as well as appreciated. Thanks for all your help, Bud!

CERTS awarded $2000 for LVH!

Most of you must have noticed the facsimile check above the mail boxes. That came to the LVH CERTS team thanks to their submitting a grant request for the purchase of an Automated Electrical Defibrillator to the Siletz Tribal Charitable Fund via the Chinook Winds Casino in Lincoln City. On November 2nd. Ron and Jacky Thomas, Marlene Crites, and Wayde and Barbara Dudley attended the awards ceremony at the Casino. After the CERTS team have had training in the use of the defibrillator it will be placed in the clubhouse where it will be available for trained team members should they be first responders.

We expect that we will have further information about the use of this device after team members have finished their training.

We thank the Siltetz Tribal Council for their generosity!

“I’ll Meet You After School.”

Written by Ellis Twitchell

scan0001“Well, here’s a note from my girlfriend!” I exclaimed to my kids as we stood inside the cavity of the old schoolhouse where I had attended school for the first three grades. I noticed that former alumni of the Moulton, Idaho Elementary School had left written notes on the remaining plaster on the walls. The school was a one-room log school house in the middle of the high desert of Southern Idaho. The school seldom had more than fifteen children attending the various eight grades it was intended to educate. It had been active from 1902 to 1948, but now the windows were long gone and the only door was nowhere to be found. Reading further along the walls, I saw a message written by Alice Jones that stated she and her siblings had attended school there and that Mrs. Twitchell was her teacher. “Was she really your girlfriend?” came from my eleven year old daughter, Tessa, whose life had recently been expanded by an awareness of boys. Nostalgia. Now I understood the meaning of nostalgia.

Alice Jones was the love of my life! She shyly captured my heart the first day of my school career. There we were, both of us First Graders, not knowing what to expect but proud that we were finally old enough to “go to school.” Several dry farms littered the countryside meagerly growing barely enough to survive and not enough to flourish. The boys wore long, brown cotton stockings under their overalls and the girls wore dresses made from floral print flour sacks which boldly proclaimed, “Burley Flour Mills” several places on the dresses. One family of three girls actually wore dresses made from commercial fabrics. That family was considered rich.

Well, back to my young love life. There she stood, blond hair and eyes the color of an autumn sky, twisting a strand of hair from her Dutch Boy style hairdo and scuffing the toes of her sturdy, brown hi-top shoes. Having been the youngest of seven boys in my family and living nearly four miles from the nearest community (if you can call it that), I had not had much opportunity to hone my skills charming the opposite sex. However, as ignorant as I was in this subject, I immediately knew there was a significant difference between Alice and Ellis. (Alice is on my right in the photo.)

She fluttered her eyelashes at me and my heart melted. I didn’t want her to see me looking at her, so we stood silent, eyes downcast as the teacher, (my mother) assigned us seats. Was it destiny that we were seated next to each other, or merely coincidence? Perhaps it was that we were two of a class of three; the other being her step-sister, Doreen. Somebody had to sit next to somebody in a class of three. But there we were, about to sit down when our eyes locked and in that instant our commitment was made. I didn’t know what “girlfriend” meant but suddenly I had one. I probably could have had two if I had made a move on Doreen, but juggling two affairs, who were also sisters, at the age of six, was more than I wanted to take on.

Eventually, we went everywhere together…everywhere you can go thirty miles from anything but sagebrush. I can’t remember ever having a spat, not even a mild disagreement. Whenever an adult would ask me the tired old question they always ask little boys (who were always quick to deny any) if I had a girlfriend, I would proudly proclaim, “You betcha! Alice Jones is my girlfriend!”

I was brought back to reality by my eight year old son saying, “Dad, you should leave her a message.” I saw wisdom in that and penciled in a note under hers, saying, “Alice Jones was my girlfriend.”

A couple of years later when we were in the area, Tessa suggested we check the old school to see if I had a “love letter” from my girlfriend. Sure enough, she had written, “Meet me around behind the schoolhouse after school.” I wrote the response, “I waited for three days…where were you?” Over the years other messages were exchanged, “Perhaps you didn’t recognize me, I’m no longer blond.” To, “I’m the bald, pot-bellied old guy with the idiot kids…”

Even now, that my kids are grown and we are back in the area, they want to see if Alice Jones had added more literary history to the old school house wall. Many years have passed and I have even shown the writings to my grand-daughters, who were properly impressed, but no more messages have appeared. The question occasionally surfaces in my mind, “What if…”

“What if…?” It is a pleasant path down which my mind wanders until it comes to Kathy, the truest and greatest love of my life. Together we have raised our kids, completed very successful careers and enjoyed uncountable adventures. We have always been best friends as well as exciting lovers and nothing can top that. I realize just how good God has been to me, and how blessed I have been. Perhaps this has been because I learned more than I realized when Alice Jones was the first love of my life!
